Airbrush Technique Issue 12 - (Page 18) My name is Jim Ferraro, I live in eastern Pa., I’ve been in the Automotive business for thirty years. The first time I picked up an airbrush was 7 years ago. The sister of a friend of mine wanted a custom license plate painted and the rest is history; I’ve been hooked ever since! Recently I started painting t-shirts and here is a how to on airbrushing a grizzly on a white t shirt. Materials I will be using are Golden Fluids Paints, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Phthal Blue, Carbon Black, Pyrrole Red and Titanium White. Golden GAC900, Golden Fluids Airbrush Medium, Iwata HP-C an old pillowcase and an iron. Spraying the workable area with GAC900 before you start and as a final topcoat combined with the medium keeps the colors from fading during washing. I reduce the colors with about 50/50 of color to medium. Also wash in cold water only- NO BLEACH!!! and hang dry or gentle cycle in dryer. First wash the shirt and dry, mount the shirt on a homemade shirt board. These can be made out of heavy cardboard or thin hard board. I sketch the bear using a very light brown colored pencil as this color will cover easily during the painting process. After the rough sketch is done I spray the area to be painted with Goldens GAC 900. This will aid in providing a good surface to paint on and stop the colors from fading during washing. Give the GAC 900 time to dry; heat set with an iron. I use a single part of a pillowcase over the shirt to keep the paint from sticking to the hot iron. (This is the method I am going to be referring to every time we have to heat set it.) Iron for at least 2 minutes on high moving the iron very slow, keep the iron moving at all times. Next start laying in dagger strokes with Burnt Sienna to render the fur, pay close attention to your photo reference as to the direction the fur flows. To render the nose and shadow areas I mix a little black with Phthal Blue, reducing it just a little with Golden’s medium. We are now ready for the first layer of paint. Using loose dagger strokes, lay down a light coat of Raw Sienna mixed with either GAC 900 or Golden’s Matte Medium.
