Airbrush Technique Issue 12 - (Page 22) Hello Kicks, I do T-shirts, have tried my hand at some plastics (hard hats, dirt bike tags, etc.), and once I did a hard tire cover for a custom van (but I didn’t sand it, I hope that lasted a while). I have an opportunity to do some motorcycles for a friend who sells them used, and he thinks they will sell faster with some nice artwork on them. I’ve read articles on painting autos and motorcycle tanks, but most of them were starting from metal and the ones that where working on factory paint only mentioned that they sanded the area first. Aside from the artwork, how much sanding is necessary on an unmarked factory finish before applying the art work? Should I sand before the final clear coat, and how do I fix a problem when I’ve sanded to much? Should I sand an area larger than the artwork, or only the area I’ve masked out? Thanks, Lou Hi Lou, thanks for the letter. If the paint is in perfect condition, You can just wash the surface with soap and water, wash and dry with a wax and silicone remover, then just sand the entire surface with 800 grit dry or 1000 wet & dry. These are basically the same coarseness and will give the surface enough tooth to hold onto the art work and the new clear, but will not show sand scratching through the clear beyond the art work. There is no need for sanding before the final clearing, and in fact that will damage the art work. Your new clear will chemically adhere to the new paint, and physically to the 800 grit sanding that is beyond it. Now, whether or not you sand an area larger than the art work depends on the kind of job and the paints that you intend to use. If you want a quality job using urethanes (base coat/clear coat), then you should definitely sand the entire panel, and reclear the entire panel. If you’re using single stage paints like One Shot, then you can get away with just sanding the area where the artwork will be. If you sand to far and go through the clear coat, you will see an immediate change of colour. This won’t go away by simply applying more clear. above by Brian Foreman www.spraytechdesigns.com above by Kimmo Jurvanen www.kjartwork.com above by Patrick Charuel aquitaine-airdeco.fr http://www.spraytechdesigns.com http://www.kjartwork.com http://aquitaine-airdeco.fr
