Airbrush Technique Issue 12 - (Page 5) Step 3: When rendering the head we proceed exactly and carefully. We will use for this part of the painting a strongly diluted umbra color too start. In addition we will use the neutral grey which we no longer use so strongly diluted (1:3 and 1:1). Step 4: Now we will start to render the fine details. The horse’s reins are black with a base of sepia applied first. We proceed here also with only strongly diluted color building the color up slowly in layers. The high lights are also again rubbed out using an easer during the process. Step 5: Occasionally we compare our painting with the photo, our sketch also is always close at hand for reference use. Now further elaboration of the details will start to take place. The chrome ring is rendered using white, neutral grey, cyanogen and also the catcheson of the reins. Colored pencils are used to assist in rendering the small details in the reins. Using a small paint brush and a mixture of ocher, white and sepia the reins acrossed the horse’s body are painted. Thus we receive some what more structure than if we used the Airbrush.
