Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 11) #1- Glossy 17” tire cover for a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. The customer dropped off the cover with an idea of Woody coming out of the tree wearing boxing gloves. Since he’s into amateur boxing it only made sense to have something of boxing in it right!? #2- After I had wiped it down with HOK wax and Grease remover, I wet sanded the entire cover with 1500 grit, just enough to take off the high gloss finish. #3- I wiped down the Cover with wax and Grease remover. Now it’s ready for the sketch. #4- I drew the image on a piece of newsprint to size. I taped it on the tire cover using green tape. I added the boxing gloves. You can see where I continued to enlarge them. Making any changes is always easier to do at this stage on the drawing before the airbrushing starts. #5- I placed a piece of Soral white transfer paper behind my drawing and lightly outlined my sketch with a ball point pen, copying the image onto the surface. #6- The transferred image on the tire cover. I don’t need alot of detail because it’s a cartoon. This is like a coloring book, once it’s drawn on the substrate I can start to color it in. Before I start painting I’ll wipe down the white outline with wax and grease remover. #7- Here is what it looked like with some of the white toned down. It’s a good idea to wipe it down so it doesn’t show through the paint., or come through to the surface when it is getting cleared. I am careful not to take too much off or else I’ll loose my lines and end up retracing the image. #8- Woody is covered in clear transfer tape I picked-up from a sign supply store. It’s easy to work with and inexpensive compared to illustration frisket. For additional coverage I use sign transfer tape. This stuff is better for covering larger areas than wasting tape or having to work with newsprint or other papers. For a cartoon subject, or any image that needs a hard edge I’ll use the mask to give a hard edge, keeping my colors clean and tight. On most projects I’ll only use a mask when it’s absolutely necessary, if I can get the same effect using a freehand shield I will. My complaint is that too much masking makes the overall painting look flat and lifeless.
