Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 12) #9- I carefully cur the beak area out of the masking to begin the painting process. Like any artist I’ll tape my reference close to me so I can easily refer back to it. I started with Woody’s beak I painted it a light white, lightly spraying the area building up the density of highlight and shadow. Next I filled my color cup of my Iwata HP-C with HOK yellow and misted it over the white base. Without first laying down a white base the color will not show up vibrantly. #10- I added some orange and purple to my yellow mixture. I found that color compliments are great guidelines to work with. Adding some purple in with the yellow to make a shadow area. I also added some orange to the mixture to punch up the color from turning an ugly mud yellow. I’ll cover the beak area with a yellow HOK candy; it’ll unify the colors and add some snap to the color and bring out some depth and life to the paint. Cover the beak with the mask and move on. #11- I ‘ll start working progressively, onto the eyes. I’ll mix some black and blue to my white to make a dirty off white so it’s not so stark. Also I want to keep my white for the highlights. #12- One of the reasons I enjoying using my HP-C is that the color cup is easily to work with. I can mix up as little or as much as I need without a lot of waste of paint, or having to constantly clean and change jars. I’ll flush out the brush with reducer so my colors don’t mix. I masked off the white of the eyes and started adding some white first, then covered lightly with yellow, then some green candy. I’ll paint it with Candies mixed with HOK SG-100 Intercoat clear so build up depth, just the same as the beak. Mask off the eye area and move on. #13- Not much to look at now but it’s coming along nicely. I used the X-Acto knife to cut away the red head; be careful not to score too deeply into the material just enough to cut and peel away the mask. I hate leaving scoring marks on the surface so I’m very careful to only go as deep as the masking material is. #14- First a light base of white so the colors actually show up then a mixture of red with a few drops of orange to punch up the color. I emptied my cup and added red with just a drop of candy blue to shade the head with. I’ll often mix my paints with candies as a shadowing technique. #15- Here’s what I mean by lightly using white to base with. I’ll paint it like a black and white picture. Building up my highlights, Since it’s already a darker surface the white will make a it easier to modulate form, giving it dimension.
