Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 16) Satisfied with the blue and white I place the white stripe “Stretchmask” pieces back into position. A nice even base of E’TAC Naphthol Red is the next step followed by reduced Auto Air Deep Red to start building the waves on the side. Once I am satisfied with the waves, I go back over the deepest parts in the waves with the reduced black mixture. I then remove the Mask from the white stripes and add the final shadows (reduced Black) and highlights (light layers of E’TAC White) to the entire flag to finish it off. With the flag complete I have now begun working on the eagle. First thing I did was cut out the deepest shadows around his eye, leaving the eyeball itself covered. I spray light layers of carbon black to give me the eye placement; now I cut out the rest of the eagle leaving only the beak covered. At this point I also lift off the two rips that will be falling behind the eagle’s head and notice a little blue overspray were the Stretch mask did not lay properly (notice the top right rip area). The E’TAC EFX paints are “erasable” paints, so later I will take the electric eraser and begin cleaning off all overspray that may have occurred. I begin adding color to the eagle head. I first spray the reduced black mixture in light layers to begin building the feathers. This is just the layout don’t worry about mistakes at this point they can be covered. Using eight drops of E’TAC Opaque Titanium Plasma White and one small drop of E’TAC Arylide Yellow I begin building another layer of feathers, To that mix I add one drop of carbon black which I use for shading some of the feathers, eye and brow area. I keep going back and forth with the two mixtures above until I am satisfied with the feathers. Lastly I go back with the E’TAC White to highlight the feathers. I applied a piece of Stretch mask and cut out just the beak. This will protect other areas from overspray and give me the hard edge on the front of the beak that I want. I sprayed a few layers of Auto Air Transparent Sun Gold as a base for the beak. With the base established I mix one drop of FW Acrylic Sepia into the sun gold and use this mixture for the shading on the beak. The photo shows were I have begun adding the highlights. After this I go back over the area with several light layers of sun gold. I will apply light layers of the reduced black shading mixture near the tip of the beak. With the beak almost complete I begin working on the inside of the eagles mouth. I use a small piece of Sticky Mickey masking and mask off the beak to prevent overspray. This will also allow me to get the hard edge on the bottom of the beak that I want. I then spray light layers of the sun gold and FW Acrylic mix to the inside edges of the mouth; this is followed up by using the reduced black mixture and outlining the tongue and key areas. Once the layout is complete I use E’TAC Transparent Magenta and color the tongue and inside of the mouth. After this I go back over with the black mixture for shadows as you see in the next photo.
