Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 17) At this point I have removed the masking and began to finalize the Eagle. I start by using the carbon black shading mixture and adding the feathers closest to the beak. I did not want to do these until the beak was complete; I can now go back and use these feathers to remove the hard edges that I don’t want to show. I will also start shading the final layouts with this mixture. Then finish off with E’TAC Opaque White for the high- lights. At this point I hold off on completing the white feathers and begin on the dark feathers. Using Auto Air Transparent Sepia I begin by laying out the individual feathers. Once I have the layout I spray an even base of sepia to work from. Since the sepia is transparent I work in layers to build up and darken key areas of the feathers. After these are complete its back to my black shading mix to add some shadows. Now that the feathers are complete I begin working on the claws. I cut out the talons and I use the Auto Air Sun Gold for the base, to build up the details, wrinkles and texture I use the Sun Gold / Sepia FW Acrylic Ink mixture that I used on the beak. Once those are complete I cut the masking from the claws and spray light layers of Carbon Black to build them up. Lastly add the highlights on the claws with the titanium white. Almost done now so I remove all the masking. Using the Electric eraser and tack cloth, I clean off any overspray I might have created. Then using the two drops carbon black/ two drops reduceair shading mixture I add the drop shadows under the rips and claws. Lastly I do any touch ups needed and add highlights and shadows as needed before I call it complete. With all the final highlights and shadows done I will call this one complete. Since I am doing a “His and Her Set”, I will use this one as a reference for laying out the design on the next helmet and start all over. Here are the Helmets after they have been cleared, sanded and buffed. I hope this article has been enjoyable and will benefit you during future projects.
