Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 19) When I found Fitto’s web site on the Internet I was blown away by to quality of his work and how original and fresh the designs where so I contacted him hoping to bring you this article. I hope you enjoy reading about one of the true masters in the airbrushing, custom painting world, Fitto. I have to thank Patrick Charuel for helping with this as Fitto is French Canadian and I do not speak French so Patrick was kind enough to help out. Fitto’s Bio: I was born in Chicoutimi, a little town in the north of Quebec. I lived on a small farm in the countryside; my closets neighbor is over 2 kilometers away. I’ve have always drawn, from primary school to today. My entire school notebook was full of imaginative drawings. I’ve been lucky to always had good friends many of whom grace many of my drawings. I think I can say that even when I was very a young man I already had a strange and special creativity, I was already a marginal kid and I felt myself as a off kid. From secondary school I have hundreds of drawings, which were done during my regular school classes. In structured art classes, I was not very good because I didn’t follow the rules and did anything I wanted. When I was 18, I moved to the Montreal area where I went to art school to improve what I call “my plastic art knowledge”. I didn’t like or fit well in this school, my concepts and ideas where always very contrary to most of what was being taught and I was unable to tolerate the mentality which consist of always following the last fashion, everybody had to have the same way of thinking and had to accept everything. But I have to admit that these structured art studies have helped me to open my mind. At that time, I had never used an airbrush. I’ve tried to find a job in the art field but the employers found me too much rock ‘n’ roll and told me that I will have to find my own way. After that I trained in soldering and the metal field. It’s during a soldering theory course that a fellow student saw my drawings and proposed that I paint his Jeep bonnet. I went out to buy the basic medium quality airbrush stuff and started to write on a piece of paper the way I’d follow to do achieve this project. When this first job was completed I was very exited because the result was really better than I could expect. After that, I’ve bought a Chevy Van, restored and airbrush it. At about this same time I also did a leather coat. A fiend of mine introduced me to a leather coat maker and I did some samples he really liked, but I was quickly disappointed when I saw that the artwork was to be mass-produced and not one off custom pieces. Shortly after that while driving in my car during the winter with the temperature at -25°, I stopped in a Rock shop to warm up and found there was an artist in the shop who was painting with an airbrush. Two weeks later this shop (Le Superock) called me to set up an appointment to check out my airbrushing skills. At that time I had done only four or five airbrush projects. Well I got the job and I’ve worked behind the window of this shop in the city centre for two years. During this time I did coats for Iron Maiden and Metallica bands. By seeing that nothing will evolve for me in that work, I’ve decided to create my own business. I went about doing a lot of shows and I have quickly found many customers with custom cars and bikes. After two years I left the reproduction paint jobs to do exclusively original creations. I’ve changed my advertising card “Airbrush Fitto creation or reproduction according to your taste “ to “Airbrush Fitto psychiatrist airbrushopath exclusive creations. I believe that with computers to reproduce art works the future was for me was in the creation of original artwork. It was the pastel color period and linear multicolor designs; I imposed my psychedelics creations and Gothic’s. At the beginning, my competitors laughed of my style but a few years later, they copied my creations or they did artwork greatly inspired by mine. My true fire and my morbid paintings where I mix 3D and organic effect helped me to become known. I became known in the rest of Canada, USA and Europe before my artwork was really appreciated in Quebec. Thanks to everyone one who trust me and give me their confidence to do my first orders.
