Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 24) My name is Rich Milo I like to paint in the style of what is called “Magic Realism”. I enjoy using a combination of an Airbrush and Hand Brush. By layering the two I can come up with an effect in my paintings which is pleasing to me and hopefully to the viewer. In this step by step I have focused on the process by which I put together the elements which make up a large canvas of 48”x54”. The title of this painting is “DESTRUCTION OF NATIVE AMERICA” . To see a video of this step by step it can be viewed at my website www.miloart.com. First I begin by stretching a canvas and then wet sanding it after applying 8 coats of gesso each one dry sanded and the last one wet sanded. Next I accumulate all the reference photos which will make up the image of the vision I have in my head. I then begin the drawing process. In step one I am seen drawing from my photograph reference using just a grey mid value watercolor pencil and a black one. I can pretty much get all the values I need depending on the pressure I use when drawing. I try to make the drawing as perfect as possible. I usually add each image working from the foreground to the background so as to avoid over lapping images and having to erase. Watercolor pencil just washes off well with a damp rag if you have to redo any part of the drawing. Here in this step I will show you a progression of the drawing. Here is the completed image. At this point I look at it and adjust any value problems darkening or lightening areas if necessary. After the image is exactly the way I want it, I seal it with 1 or 2 good coats of Krylon matt medium #1311 It is now time to start the painting process. When I am doing a fine art canvas like this one I like to use Liquitex Heavy Body paints, which I will thin out and bring to an airbrush consistency. I am beginning here with the Statue of Liberty. When I paint each image I don’t let the over all painting overwhelm me. I simply treat each piece of the painting as if it was the whole. I usually find a local color and build the entire image that I am painting with that color and some white, molding it slowly. After that I introduce the dark colors and the highlights, which are value variations of the first color. http://www.miloart.com
