Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 30) We are now at the final part of the design. If you have been practicing your brush exercises this should be fairly easy. For the final pinstripe we will use a Mack #1 and a #1 Lettering Quill for the scrolls. You will see that the scroll design is a little different than the scrolls in the last issue. This is more of an antique style; basically think of it as a very small scroll that has to match on all four sections. Starting from top left side pull the brush down rotating it to the left and stop. When doing the short horizontal line work left to right be sure to have a nice squared off edge for this part of design. Right under the gold leaf I am pulling a line from right to left making a short horizontal stripe, roll your brush to the right while pulling it up. The next two short curves are also made the same way. Start at a point and roll to the right and pull up. Connecting the final stripe to Gold Leaf pull down slightly to the left into outline area. Now do the opposite for the right side. Outside outline is now complete and you will see I added a thick and thin accent to the top of the design. The next two photos are showing the inside line. This line is a little thinner than the outside for accent. Again start at the top and roll your brush in proper manner. Remember at the bottom to rotate the brush to get an even line. Start on other side, be careful to lift off when finishing a line or you will put paint were it doesn’t belong! Scrolls on top: This is why you really need to make a sketch of this kind of scroll design. You will notice that the top scrolls start on the inside of the top lines. Think of these scrolls as an S, a lazy S laying on its side; only there is only one curved part, the other or starting point is flat. Using a Quill apply pressure at the beginning and pull brush and lighten up pressure for your S at the end. You can render the S very tight or make it loose. On next part of scroll do the same stroke again, connecting it to first design; that is the hardest part of the design. Now just add strokes thin or thick inside S areas, and in middle were the two connect. Bottom Scrolls: Again this set of scrolls starts on the outside starting thick go into an S. I have turned this panel for ease of work. You will find as you stripe you will have easy hand positions and some will be very time consuming. If I was doing this type of work on a cycle tank it would have to be taken off for ease of working on it. Last part of design: This shows me working left to right doing the simplest scroll of them all, a basic one part thick scroll. I am using Mahl Stick to get better control of this last part of brushwork. Try to get it to match as close as possible. As you can tell it is a lot of work and planning to get a design this far often the painting is the easiest part. As with any art form pinstriping is a proud art form that has been around thousands of years, it can be modern, way out, classy, clean, narrow, thick, anyway you want it. I hope you have enjoyed this article. Thank you Don Johnson, Cheryl Pearson for really making this happen, and to Dee Peterson for all the photos.
