Airbrush Technique Issue 21 - (Page 7) One of the most used excuse’s for not becoming involved in airbrush, art is “But I can’t draw”. There are tools you can make use of to over come the “I can’t draw” excuse, art projector, light boxes, stencils, templates are some of the most commonly used artist tools. Start out using these tools and before you know it you won’t need to use them. Drawing is learning to look at an objects proportions and how its proportions relate to surrounding objects, perspective in other words. How large an eye is in relationship to the nose; where objects line up in relationship to each other. Or it could be a car door and the edge of a windshield on a car. Using a art projector will help you understand these relationships while you practice both airbrushing and drawing. It’s just a matter of learning, practicing the basic skills until you gain confidence in your airbrushing and drawing skills. Using a art projector is fairly straight forward and easy; in the model by Artograph above you place your photograph or drawing on the projector. Project your image onto the drawing surface, trace you’re out line onto your drawing surface, refine the line drawing and your pretty much ready to airbrush the design. Using a art projector to lay a design out is a technique used by many of the well know airbrush artist so don’t sell using this tool out as cheating, it’s just another tool many artist use. This car is the going to be our shop show car representing Proformance Unlimited. Obviously, the engine is built by us--it’s a 383 Chevy small block. We contacted John Phillips to do the artwork for us since he has done artwork in the shop for us in the past. This is Johns’ first car project. We also contacted Javier Soto to work with John since he does not have much experience in car art. John pretty much did the base art and Javier came in to do all of the detail and final touch ups. As you can see in the pictures, the detail is amazing. I wish you could see us standing around the car just starring at the work Javier has done with bringing this car to life he is truly a first class artist. Kimberly Attanasio, Pro-Formance Unlimited, Ocean, NJ. This is a picture of the Viking God passenger side panel—the is breathtaking. Base done by John Javier did the detail. Below Doug Mascaritola, owner and operator of Performance Unlimited w/ his ’85 Chevy El Camino—very proud of the work being done.
