Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 11) Next I start in with the hi-lights on the morphed skulls with a really thinned out white, almost a watery consistency and yes I keep my air cap on during these fine detailed moments. I’ve totally zoned out at times trying to stay really tight with the details, with the air cap off and got to close and dragged the surface with the needle, damaging the surface and the needle. So now I keep the air cap on at all times except when the airbrush is being cleaned. I get along fine with it on. I also add some glowing eyes to the “lost souls” in the background. What I like to do with the glowing eyes is to do a really soft round white dot and then hit it with some trans blue, or green, then do a really tight white dot smack in the middle of the soft glow. Now it is time to take off the masking around the design very carefully so you don’t bring up any of the vinyl design. Then pieceby-piece I peel the vinyl design pieces and start to airbrush in overlapping drop shadows and top edge shadows. Once the vinyl design is peeled and all drop shadows are done, then I come in with some loose beveled shadows on the inside bottom edge of the design. What I mean by loose beveled shadows is when you bevel the edge freehand rather than using fine line tape or a straight edge hand mask. This gives it a natural round bottom edge as if your light value is coming from straight above the design. I didn’t add white hi-lights to the inside top edge of the vinyl design because sometimes the opaque white will deaden the silver pearl glow and I felt that this glow was to pretty so I left it as is.
