Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 13) C.S. Bailey graduated from the University of Utah with a BFA in Fine Arts and has been airbrushing for over 30 years. He specializes in modern aircraft, World War II aircraft and Naval ships of all types and does Illustration work for books, maga- zines, and model companies. He is a member of the American Society of Aviation Artists, and the Oklahoma Aviation Artist Association and the Air force art program. You can view his work at www.airartcsbailey.com When I work on canvas or a private project I take as much time as I need to produce exactly what I want. However when doing a commission for a book, magazine or a model company time is money and the faster you can produce an illustration the more money you make. By using short cuts and working smarter you can reduce the pre painting portion of your project. Upon receiving an order, the first thing I do, is scour my photo archive for the appropriate subject mater. I often go to model show museums and air shows and photograph as many aircraft as possible. If I don’t find what I want, I will bite the bullet and build the model. Here I set up a model of a SBD-2 Dauntless. I already know how I want to depict the aircraft, so I photograph it from the proper angle diving on the IJN Akagi during the battle of Midway. Next I transfer the photo to a drawing. I graduated from the University of Utah in the field of fine art, so I know how to draw. However, time is money and with a 14 day time limit I need to cut corners so I can spend more time painting. I will enlarge the line drawing at a copy shop to the size I need and then flip the drawing over and trace the image on the backside then I will position the drawing over the Illustration board and retrace the image. This will leave the pencil marks on the board. I will then spend the next day tightening the image, adding detail and working out markings and lettering and deciding on the light source direction. http://www.airartcsbailey.com http://www.airartcsbailey.com
