Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 21) Introduction: This portrait has been airbrushed on a canvas prepared with gesso: Size 60 X 70 cm. The only color used is black; this technique will make use of the canvas/geeso color for highlighted areas of the painting. Material: - Airbrush: Infinity 0.2 - Paint: House of Kolor Black - Cutter, Erasers, solvent thinner, etc 1) I begin by transferring the portrait using a slide projector and draw the outline with a light grey charcoal pencil. I gently wipe the surface with a towel to remove any of the loose charcoal powder helping me achieve a very light design outline which will make it easier to cover with transparent paint. With over reduced black and free hand airbrushing I outline the eyes and build lightly the face shape placing the main shadows. I work with a very thin paint to the point it looks like just colored thinner. There is no need to be precise here just focus on building the shadow areas. 2) With the same color I continue to add to the main design parts. At this stage I don’t care about color and contrast; just focus on the shadows and giving depth to the painting by controlling scale between the white and black. 3) Here is a picture of the first stage completed. All the design parts are visible; the depth of the design is as I want it to be. 4) I start to build the eyes slowly with very the same thin black at a pressure around 1 bar. By working with thin paint and many layers you can control all the grey scale and shade all the colors naturally. Even if using an over reduced color like this takes a long time it will give a natural effect to the painting. This holds especially true for painting faces where there are not hard lines.
