Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 26) How To Airbrush Hellboy on a T Shirt by Xzotic Ink What makes a good painting is a good reference picture. When I attempted this painting I was using a regular photocopy. If you can pull up the reference photo off the Internet of Hellboys face, you will see he has a lot of skin texture that I did not attempt in this design. I feel it’s unreasonable to try to make someone’s skin texture without really seeing it. Meaning, I am just working from what i can see from my old photocopy. High-resolution photos are the best to work from. Don’t worry if you do not have one cause we are not doing high-resolution reference work for this how to. What’s good about this “how to” for artist is its all about building up tones and layering down simple basic colors and mixtures. Do not look at this and say you can’t attempt it, follow these easy steps below and I’m very confident you can all do it. TOOLS : 1.) Colored prism pencil “RED” 2.) one white t-shirt 3.) Createx colors: red, brown, black, white, yellow, orange As you can see HELLBOYS facial design is red so using a red PRISM colored pencil I can draw the basic lay out of where his eyes, nose, mouth and chin will be; just about where I think it places best on this t- shirt. You will not see the red line underneath the red paint, so it’s safe to make a mistake and redraw without panicking it will show through your paint. Lightly just play around with the facial features, and mark off some important highlight zones for you to remember later. A great technique to use too find placement on the t-shirt would be making a grid out of your reference, and than place the grid lines on your t-shirt. I still use this old school technique when I might be having trouble figuring out placement. You can also use a projector. I start with spraying my outlines with orange, cause I’m seeing more of a reflection of an orange top, near his forehead, cheek bones, and bridge of the nose as well; I lightly just mist in some color. I than move on to the bottom of the chin area and do the same process just substituting my orange for red; very lightly go mist in your outlined area. Be careful not to cover your lines to dark as you want to gradually build up the layer tones in his facial area. Now that I have worked the light mist of red through out all my outline work you can see it covered up the red pencil marks nicely. I’m working tiny dagger strokes for the inside of the horn area and defining the eyes with harder lines still using the same color red. Defining the nose area, which is now starting to pull some of the facial features out. Can you see how that little bit of orange is popping through the top part of the face? That is exactly what you want because his chin area is tucked back further than his horns. This will provide more depth to the horn area.
