Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 27) Still not switching colors yet, we are defining areas with tiny, tiny dagger strokes, like the lips and chin hairs, repeating this process in more detailed areas like the sides of his beard near his shoulders. Now we switch formulas to 70 percent red and 30 percent brown giving it a darker red tone. Do not attempt to use black it won’t work at all; the brown will play off the red nicely. I now start to define some depth in different areas all over the painting. I work long dagger strokes in the hair going the same direction as I see the hair following in my reference photo. So for the right side I use a down ward dagger stroke and on the left side I use more of an outward dagger stroke to keep a flowing motion going in his hair. I also define the bottom of his horn area and inside corners of his eyes. Just blend the eye area don’t go to hard with it; a light blend near the inside corner of the eyes will give a forward look to the bridge of his forehead and nose area. Make sure you pull that blend nice and evenly down the left side of his nose. Did you notice his left cheek area? I do not over kill this area just a light mist closer to the inside of the cheek; also the inside of the lips to give them plumpness. Again using tiny dagger strokes and the same on his chin hair. Always lay down your dagger strokes in the same motion as you see the surface going in your reference photo. Change formula again this time to 50 percent red, 50 percent brown giving it a nice darker version reflecting the red still. Begin by working the hair areas near his cheekbones just lightly blending in. Add some more inside the mouth area using dagger strokes again. Define underneath his nose, that crooked crack going down his mouth, small hairline dagger stroke it is, corners of the horn area. I than gently mist in shapes, “NOT LINES”, under his nose and where his facial features sag. Changing now to YELLOW and hitting highlighted areas only. First his hair on left side, the tops of the horn area and inside of his eyes. VERY LIGHT MIST some on his right side of his cheek, and a tad on his forehead areas. I’m spraying my yellow in shapes of highlighter areas that I can see from my reference. You can’t tell but I have also sprayed a tad of yellow in his bottom lip to pull it more forward.
