Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 28) I’m changing my formula to not just white, but a pinkish white by combining about 10 percent red into 90 percent white, this will play off the red colors nicely. What you want to do is follow your yellow highlighted areas, just blend in with those areas a tad. I also went back and hit the top corners of the horn to pull them a bit more forward in the painting. THAT’S ABOUT IT! Just like I said simple and easy, making shapes and using different color combinations from one main color “RED”. It took me about maybe an hour and half to complete this painting, but if you are not stopping and taking photos my guess would be about 45 mins. Time is priceless if your learning so don’t worry, go slow and be accurate. Understand what you’re trying to do and as time goes on the next one will be easier to do. Now what are you waiting for, LETS SEE YOU DO IT! Keith Richards Panel This is a portrait that I decided to paint on a piece of sheet metal, which I intend to frame. The method explained is typical of my approach to 95% of my work and I tend to use the same water based paint system. I’m not after photorealism here but merely my interpretation of what I see. This just happens to be the style that I am most at ease with and lends itself to most other subjects as well, particularly animals. This approach also works for canvas or motorcycles. I am a fan of water-based paints for 3 reasons. First of all they are non-toxic, secondly they are very easy to clean up and last of all they come in some great vibrant colors these days. It’s perhaps also worth a mention that I rarely cut masking on the surface. I prefer to use my pre-cut stencils. This gives more control on the hardness of the edge you’re after. You’re also not going to score the surface at all and making tight curves is also easier if you can spin a piece of paper around on a cutting mat while you’re cutting it. My paints and equipment used are shown below: Etac Private Stock: chromatic white, chromatic black, conditionair, distilled water. Auto Air: transparent fire red, transparent sunset yellow, transparent root beer, transparent teal blue, transparent magenta, transparent purple, transparent red purple. Airbrushes: Iwata Eclipse with 0.5 nozzle, Iwata hp-b hi-line, Iwata RG-3 spray gun. Step1: To begin with I print out a black and white image to be used for my basic layout. The panel has been primed, scuffed and base coated with Auto Air Pearl Plumb reduced with 4011 reducer. I cut out certain areas of my stencil with my scalpel and use the paper as a loose stencil in order to map out my main areas. The main face area is cut out so I can create an edge to the face and from here I add the features very roughly.
