Airbrush Technique Issue 22 - (Page 29) Step2: I remove the brightest parts of the print out first which are the eyes and teeth. After this it’s basically cutting along any wrinkles and creases ( and there are lots! ) so that I can map out the main features so that everything sits in the right place. Step3: At this stage I have finished with the paper stencils and I put any cut pieces of paper to one side just in case I need them later on to re-define any edges. You can also see that I am now using the white to freehand the lightest parts of the face first. Any areas that appear brightest are concentrated on first. For the white I like to use Etac Private Stock which I dilute 1 part water/3 parts paint; I dilute with 4 drops of Etac condition-air to one ounce of distilled water which I pre-mix in a dropper bottle. The condition-air helps prevent tip dry and lets the paint flow better. Step4: The white is now giving depth and form to the face. I think this is my favorite part. So long as you go easy on the darker areas and heavier on the lighter parts you will begin to see the face come to life. This part is all about creating a good base for the colors to show up on and also gives you something to aim at when it comes to the details. Step5: The white under-painting is now complete. I have all but covered the base color with different concentrations of the white. Some of the whitest areas required several passes. It’s best to use a diluted white as it gives you more control and smoother graduations; also less visible overspray. Step6: This step really does punch out the features. I use Etac Private Stock chromatic black diluted the same as the white previously. I hit the darkest areas but stay away from the skin. It’s very easy to make the face look muddy if you overdo this stage.
