Airbrush Technique Issue 23 - (Page 12) BASE COATING : With a Badger 360 and Acrylic paint. Compatible choices are: Apple Barrel, Plaid, Americana. Using Apple Barrel colors I spray the various areas of the pattern with the thickest paint my airbrush can withstand. I Do Not fret about overspray as I will later come back in and tighten areas down. Since I am using thicker paint a higher PSI such as 40, 50, even 60 may be used, depending on the paint. Overspray WILL result in using a higher pressure of course. The thicker you can spray the paint the better the adhesion to the Coroplast. If on this step you need to reduce, water is compatible, but limit the reduction as much as possible. *NOTE : I place a gray base coat in areas where hair will be applied to the image to assist in bringing forward nice crisp hairlines. TRIMMING: Using an Iwata CS I repeat the colors with some reduction to the paint and PSI to detail out the overspray areas. SHADING : Here you may still be seeing faint pattern lines. If you are having any or too much marker bleed through refer to Tip & Tricks at the end of this article. In this step I shade with House of Kolor Kandies in tones darker than each base color applied, and add lighter highlights to areas. It is your option to stay with Acrylics for shading; the HOK Kandies give a bit more depth. DETAILING: For nice crisp fine line detail work I use the Master G44 airbrush to bring out the highlights in the eyes, hair, hands etc. with higher reduced paint. Here I do some last minute editing on areas, and add some lettering. http://www.airbrushtechnique.com
