Airbrush Technique Issue 23 - (Page 23) This project was a lot of fun. I love comic books, so when the movie comes out I think of a sweet T-Shirt design; here is how I went about airbrushing the design. Supplies you will need for this project: At least one airbrush, Frisket Film, Xacto knife, tape, colors you will need: deep red, sunrise yellow, sky blue, black, white, orange, brown, dark brown. I make this dark brown by filling up a four ounce paint container half way with brown and add black one drop at a time until I have the color I want. Step 1: Lay the design out on the T Shirt. Step 2: I start by detailing the head with the dark brown I made. When you look at the pictures of the finished artwork you will notice three different shades of the same color, dark brown. They’re painted in a wavy pattern to give a reflection feel on metal, you don’t want to blend smooth you want to see the three distinct patterns, Your light source is coming from the top left corner of the art project. Step 3: As I move down I decide to airbrush in two parts, light and dark. Start on the dark side first, it’s easy to start there because it has little reflection. Using dark brown I fill in my dark areas but leave selected areas highlighted by not filling them in. Step 4: This step is hard so you need to study the picture as I tell you what has taken place. The wavy pattern that gave us our metal look changes direction. On the face it was vertical but on the body it’s horizontal. Light source stays the same. There is shadow under the arm and inner ribcage. Continue to use dark brown to airbrush. Step 5: As I finish up airbrushing the body I add my shadows to the right side, as our light source would indicate they would be. I also fill in dark areas where the armor may overlap parts, still using the dark brown. Step 6: Now comes the fun. Steps two thru five laid out the body and shadows, now we let our transparent colors do their job. With a transparent color the darker the background the less you will see. So we take transparent sunrise yellow and airbrush over the top of the areas of dark brown. You will see what we did before now really looks great with the yellow over it. Where the colors are dark the yellow looks dark and where color is light the yellow looks light.
