ELY S. PARKER AWARD
Sandra Begay, former AISES executive
director, introduced Dr. Patricia Nez
Henderson (below), winner of the 2017 Ely S.
Parker Award. The highest AISES honor, the
Ely S. Parker Award recognizes distinguished
service to the indigenous community and
the professional achievements of Native
Americans in STEM.
Henderson is vice president of the Black
Hills Center for American Indian Health, a
nonprofit organization in Rapid City, S.D.,
that addresses myriad health needs of
Northern Plains tribes. She is the first
American Indian woman to graduate from
the Yale School of Medicine, where she faced
isolation and loneliness but persevered to
become a strong female role model to tribal
nations, as well as AISES students. During
her distinguished career as a physician and
health researcher she has changed attitudes
about commercial tobacco use in Indian
Country through her work on tobacco
control and prevention programs among
American Indian populations. In addition to
her work in tribal communities, Henderson
serves on the Interagency Committee on
Smoking and Health within the Office on
Smoking and Health at the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
In accepting the award Henderson spoke
of the importance of AISES in her life: "As a
second-year medical student I found myself
at an AISES conference with Wilma Mankiller.
I was ready to quit medical school at Yale, but
she told me if I didn't stick with it for myself, I
should do it for the students who would come
after me." Henderson took those words to
heart. "It all started here for me at AISES," she
said. "Together we can make a difference in
this community through science."
