EVALUATING HOW SUMMER
INTERNSHIPS IMPACT
UNDERREPRESENTED
MINORITY STUDENTS'
STEM IDENTITY FORMATION
According to the researchers who
presented the session, of the more
than 55,000 PhDs in all fields
awarded in the United States in
2015, only 140 were awarded to
American Indian or Alaska
Native (AIAN) students. In
response, a research team
investigated summer internships
geared toward AIAN students at the
high school through graduate levels
and their ability to help interns build a
"science identity." Researchers also looked at
factors, including finances, family obligations, inadequate
preparation, and prejudice/racism, that affect "persistence." Taken
together, these components help predict the intent of students to
remain in the field. Internships are expected to encourage
participants to see science as a community process and build
students' self-efficacy, or confidence in their ability to succeed in
science. The study looked at four programs and what motivates
AIAN students to pursue internships. Internship participants were
surveyed on their internship experience and science identity.
Among their conclusions, the researchers determined that there
needs to be a better understanding of how to help mentors be the
type of mentor each intern needs.
