Palm - Fall 2007 - (Page 30) in the spotlight ALUMNI AWARDS BUSINESS Maj. Gen. Stephen T. Johnson, Monmouth ’69, received Monmouth College’s highest alumni honor as he was inducted into its Hall of Achievement on October 20th during Homecoming Weekend. Brother Johnson was the commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. As the force’s commander, Johnson was in charge of most of the 22,000 Marines assigned in Iraq as well as the ongoing security operations (Iron Fist and River Gate) in western Iraq, including the cities of Fallujah, Ramadi, and Karbala. Johnson has been decorated with the Defense Superior Service Medal and two awards from the Legion of Merit. Dr. Carl Baldwin Freidhoff, Miami ’79, was named Cambridge Who’s Who Professional of the Year in Aerospace Electronics for his co-invention of the mass spectrograph on a chip as well as his work on miniaturization of chemical sensors and an X-band time delay unit. Dr. Freidhoff has also been senior technical advisor to Northrop Grumman’s Advanced Technology Department and principal investigator at its Science and Technology Center. A scholarship was created in honor of Edward Maxwell, Mississippi State ’37; the first Worthy Master of Epsilon Epsilon. Beginning with the fall 2007 semester, the Maxwell Endowed Scholarship will provide funds for qualifying graduates of Tupelo and New Albany high schools and Pillow Academy who are entering their first year at Mississippi State. A graduate from each high school will be selected for a one year $1,500 scholarship that they can reapply for each successive year they attend. Alan Stout, Murray State ’75 , has been elected to chair the board of regents for his Alma Mater. Alan has been on the Murray State Board of Regents since 2004 and with his chair position would like to continue construction on new residential colleges. ITS Dan Cornelison, Simpson ’76, has entered the ever expanding ethanol industry as the CEO and President of Vision Fuels Holding Company, LLC. Under his leadership, Vision will be building three plants, each producing 110 million gallons per year of this renewable energy, in and around Iowa. Andrew Curtis, Northern Kentucky ’06, was chosen by a Skyline Chili in Price Hill, Ohio to design their new uniforms. Brett Allred, Kansas State ’03, started his own entrepreneurial venture in the form of “Tanks Tavern” in the Aggieville District of Manhattan, Kan. The tavern is named after Allred’s white American pitbull, Tank, who has taken up residence there and enjoys greeting the patrons. Allred in continuing to raise eyebrows in the Manhattan business community, after he started two businesses from scratch while an undergraduate brother of Delta Theta. Tyler Kurlas, Southern California ’06, launched TicketClub, an online ticket vendor in the Los Angeles area, which sells last-minute tickets to some of the hottest attractions in town. Brother Kurlas garnered about $50,000 from local investors as well as family and friends in order to help get TicketClub off and running. Kurlas, who has become a part-time student to devote more time to TicketClub said he spends about 50 to 60 hours per week creating marketing materials, securing direct sales, collecting feedback and garnering new contacts. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun,” said Kurlas. IN BRIEF www.ato.org 30 POLITICS Jason Thornton, Southern Miss ’83, has announced his candidacy for re-election as Justice Court Judge for District 3 in Jackson County, Mississippi. Asked of his candidacy, Thornton stated that he believes “in treating everyone fairly and equally. [He appreciates] the confidence that the people of Jackson County have placed in [him] and humbly asks for your continued support and vote.” palm http://www.ato.org
