Palm - Fall 2007 - (Page 31) Matt Smith, Ball State ’93, is serving as the special assistant and senior advisor to Secretary Jim Nicholson of Veterans Affairs, in the “Task Force on Returning Global War on Terror Heroes.” The special, inter-agency task force was created by President George W. Bush to thoroughly examine and cut through red tape affecting the latest generation of combat veterans seeking services and benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs or any other federal agency. Dr. John D. Crouch, Southern Cal ’78, has been conducting the radio addresses on the “Ask the Whitehouse” forums on National Security for the past few months. Dr. Crouch, who serves President George W. Bush as the Deputy National Security Advisor, has given interviews on pre-war intelligence and the progress in Iraq. Matt Valenti, Penn ’03, won his second consecutive NCAA National Championship in the 133 pound weight class. He is just the second Penn Wrestler, and the first since 1942, to become a two-time National Champion. He finished his final season at Penn with a record 137 career wins as a three-time All American. Valenti joins a proud tradition of wrestling dominance at the Pennsylvania Tau chapter. Brett Matter, Penn ’97, won the national title in the 157 pound weight class in 2000. That same year, Brandon Slay, Penn ’94, became an Olympic Gold Medalist at the Sydney Games. The chapter boasts over 20 All Americans in the past decade. Brad Stevens, DePauw ’96, was named the new head coach of the Butler University Men’s Basketball Team. Stevens recently completed his 6th season as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. With Stevens’ help, Butler compiled a school-record 29-7 season and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. ENTERTAINMENT The Rev. Dr. Rayner W. Hesse, Jr. Maryland ’73, has coauthored a new book titled “Cooking with the Bible,” from Greenwood Press, which presents 18 meals found in the Scriptures, along with complete menus and recipes for recreating some of the foods enjoyed by people in biblical times. This is Brother Hesse’s second book, a third “Jewelrymaking Through World History,” is due out later this year. SPORTS Curt Miller, Baldwin Wallace ’87, recently led the Bowling Green State University’s women’s basketball team to a berth in the NCAA tournament. Miller has created a program that has dominated the Mid-American Conference in women’s basketball, winning three straight league titles and three conference tournaments, as well as only losing one MAC game during the past two seasons. Miller joins Jim Tressel, Baldwin Wallace ’72 as the second BW Tau to lead an Ohio collegiate sports team to a place of national prominence. palm www.ato.org 31 http://www.ato.org
