Palm - Fall 2007 - (Page 6) NAVIGATING GENERATION ME FOR GENME Limit exposure to TV shows that emphasize exorbitant lifestyles Value social relationships Combat depression naturally Cultivate realistic expectations Get involved in your neighborhood and community “Generation Me” by Dr. Jean Twenge until you hit 30 and realize you aren’t rich and famous yet. I think there are going to be a lot of unhappy, dissatisfied young people, and there already are.” MAKE IT HAPPY So how does an unhappy, dissatisfied young person turn into a happy, satisfied, fulfilled person? Through valued relationships with people. “What research, and some amount of common sense suggests is that the self isn’t a very good basis for mental health,” said Twenge. “To really live a good and happy life you need to 6 value your relationships with others. When fraternities are able to facilitate close relationships, that can be an important part of helping to combat the increasing NPI scores” Providing close relationships is exactly what ATO is in the business of doing. “I’ve learned infinitely more from being an ATO than any other experience in my life,” said Raymond Galaviz, Pepperdine ’06. “But the relationships that I’ve been able to establish have been the key. “So much of what we do goes back to the fundamental idea penned in our creed, to bind men together in a Brotherhood,” said Chief Executive Officer Wynn Smiley. “To foster these kinds of close personal relationships with our members is exactly what we want to do at every campus where there is an ATO chapter.” Students who join ATO get an experience that forces them to learn how to deal with things like constructive criticism, and consequently, techniques to manage their own generation. “Anytime we have a grievance with a brother we have a private one-on-one meeting to discuss the issue,” said former Georgia Chapter President Bryan Pruiett. “This normally resolves the issue and it prevents public callouts which guys don’t respond to. They’re much more open when you can personalize the situation.” According to research, that’s exactly what a Generation Me individual is looking for, some way to bring the focus back to the self. “This is a generation that has been brought up focusing on the self,” said Twenge. According to Brad Karsh, CEO and President of JobBound, transferring to the workplace becomes a dicey situation for much of Generation Me. “There are very real issues with students entering the workplace,” said Karsh. “They have problems with a lot of very fundamental workplace ideas and have this sense of entitlement about them.” Karsh’s company aims to help prepare both students and employers to handle the challenges entering the work force. JobBound offers resume help, interviewing tips and just recently added the services of a “Managing the Millennials” seminar. “Most students coming out of college have a displaced idea of what the workforce is going to be like,” said Karsh. Fraternities, however, are uniquely situated to help prepare students and give them a better sense of what life post-college will really be like. “Fraternities can help in a lot of ways,” said Karsh. “Being a good team member, understanding your role, paying your dues, deferring to leadership, dealing with people at different levels…these are all skills acquired www.ato.org palm http://www.ato.org
