Palm - Fall 2007 - (Page 7) “So much of what we do goes back to the fundamental idea penned in our creed, to bind men together in a Brotherhood.” Wynn Smiley Chief Executive Officer Alpha Tau Omega Taus at the newly chartered Kappa Zeta chapter at James Madison University celebrate the success of achieving an ATO Charter. This kind of positive achievement and recognition goes along way to preparing Generation Me for life after college. in fraternities.” “When I joined ATO, I knew wanted to get involved,” said Nebraska Chapter President Andy West. “But I knew that it wasn’t a situation where I could just step in and immediately run the whole show. I needed to learn from the older guys in the chapter and our alumni and figure out what ATO really was all about.” Another big component of the workforce is the idea of duty. “There needs to be some sense of duty to get the job done and a sense of duty to the employer,” said Karsh. “Fraternities help members recognize duty to community, to the organization…not just duty to the self.” This is evident when asking ATO members to recount the most important thing they’ve learned as an ATO. “I learned what it was like to be part of something bigger than myself,” said Former Oklahoma Colony President Clint Shaw. “ATO has been the best experience of my life.” Karsh, who worked at advertising giant Leo Burnett prior to founding JobBound, says that being an active member of a fraternity also helps when it comes to finding a job. “Being an active member and holding leadership positions in a fraternity is a big plus to a lot of employers,” said Karsh. “They like to see that because it tells them you have some experience in working in groups, effectively managing difficult people, inspiring others….all things that are critical in the job market.” “When I was in high school, I would stress out about stuff that was all about me,” said Pruiett. “Now, I have classes and part time jobs, but I stressed about being president of a chapter that had 90 plus members and a sizable operating budget. My concern rests in seeing my chapter and the brothers who comprise it continue to thrive.” NAVIGATING GENERATION ME FOR PARENTS Junk the self-esteem emphasis and teach self-control and good behavior Do not automatically side with your child Limit exposure to violence Don’t use words like spoiled “Generation Me” by Dr. Jean Twenge A CHANGED ATO Nationally, ATO has, in many ways, changed the manner in which it both communicates and educates members in an effort to reflect the changing personality of the latest generation of students. “We’ve seen that guys respond at a much higher rate and accept both criticism and praise much more readily when we personalize our message and relate it back to how it is going to impact the individual,” said Director of Marketing Matt DeWolf. “E-mails, personal video communication, Web stories, everything we do is focused back on helping the individual understand the importance of the message we are trying to communicate.” Ironic, considering the fraternity’s fundamental palm www.ato.org 7 http://www.ato.org
