THE 78TH ATO CONGRESS in Louisville, Ky. brought focus back to the fundamental purpose of the fraternity - to bind men together in a brotherhood that is as lasting as humanity and as strong as right itself. Showcasing old footage from the 1930s of founders Otis Allan Glazebrook and Erskine Mayo Ross, the 78th Congress gave attendees a sense of being a part of something bigger than themselves. “To see the footage of the founders and to think about the rich history and traditions of the organization is truly something special,” said the Honorable Cory J. Ciklin, former National President. the Epsilon Gamma chapter at the University of Maryland. Thomas Arkle Clark’s nephew Tom Clark, Illinois ’39, was presented with a framed photo of his uncle bring presented with the key to the city of Omaha and was on hand to witness the presentation of the Thomas Arkle Clark award to Thomas Reives, Rose-Hulman ’05. Reives was a standout football player, track star, and chapter officer all while maintaining a 3.97 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. Make sure you catch Reives’ acceptance speech available at ato.org. Another prestigious individual honor awarded this year was the National President’s Award. This year, the award was given to Gene Ehlert, Iowa State ’59, for his dedication and commitment to Alpha Tau Omega. Ehlert is the long-standing chapter advisor and board of trustees chairman at Iowa State, having worked with 13 different chapter presidents. The 78th ATO Congress also welcomed a new ATO brother, Mateen Elass. Elass was honor initiated just hours after speaking to attendees on the evolution of Otis Allan Glazebrook’s vision and how it fits today’s worldview. Elass was raised in Saudi Arabia in a Muslim environment. He holds degrees from Stanford University, Fuller Theological Seminary, and a PhD from the University of Durham in England. He has served in a church in Colorado and currently serves as senior pastor of a Presbyterian church in the Midwest. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from a VIP Panel sponsored by the ATO Foundation. VIP Panel presenters included Outside the Classroom Founder and Brandon Busteed, Oklahoma State System of Higher Education Chancellor Glen D. Johnson and Nebraska Investment Council State Investment Officer David Bomberger. ATO was honored to have two congressmen in attendance at the 78th ATO Congress. The Honorable Harry Mitchell, Arizona State ’59, and The Honorable Nathan Deal, Mercer ’61, made a point to attend the final banquet event. 16 At Congress, 22 chapters were awarded True Merit bowls and this year’s Top Chapter recipient was AT O PA L M FA L L 2 0 0 8 http://www.ato.org
