Palm - Fall 2008 - (Page 26) in brief Alumni Events >> The Alpha Nu chapter at Mount Union recently held an alumni charity golf scramble that included over 60 alumni. With over 20 teams participating, the chapter was able to raised $2,000 for battered women. The alumni of the Alpha Zeta chapter at Mercer University held its biennial reunion May 2-3, 2008 at Lake Blackshear Resort in Cordeal, Ga. Over 60 brothers and wives attended the event and this event has been held since 1992. TA U : AL U MN I N E W S Have you submitted an alumnus update lately? Email to palmeditor@ato.org. >> Tad Yates, Florida ’88, was elected as the 2008-2009 President of the Orange County Bar Association. The association consists of 3,100 members and through its voluntary support of the Legal Aid Society is considered one of the outstanding bar associations in the country. Yates is a criminal defense lawyer and partner with the Winter Park law firm of Kirkconnell, Lindsey, Snure & Yates PA. Chapter Eternal Paul Dee Walt Kirk >> Troy held its 5th annual Founders Day banquet on Sept. 27, 2008. Over 160 Kappa Beta alumni, family and friends were in attendance for the banquet. The founding father class that had just graduated was recognized for all of their hard work in restarting the chapter. >> Iowa State – On Sept. 5, 2008, the Gamma Upsilon chapter held a banquet to celebrate the Centennial anniversary of its chartering. Over 100 alumni joined the active chapter to celebrate the occasion. ATO Chief Executive Officer Wynn Smiley was on hand to personally present the chapter with its 100-year plaque. Retirements & Promotions >> Paul Dee, Florida ’67, recently retired from his position as the Director of Athletics for the University of Miami. Dee served as the athletic director for the Hurricanes for 15 years, which ties for the longest tenure at the university for that position. During Dee’s time as athletic director, Miami won three team national championships (baseball in 1999 and 2001, football in 2001.) Dee will stay on faculty at the university teaching at the university law school and school of education. >> Joseph Haniford, Rose-Hulman ’77, is the vice president and general manager of Alcoa Forged and Cast Products and recently was recognized with the international company’s Global Leadership Award for being the top performing division in 2007. >> The Florida Bar honored Kenneth Murrah, Emory ‘52, for his 50 years of dedication to the practice of law. To be recognized, members must be in good standing of The Florida Bar and attain their 50th anniversary of admittance to the practice of law in Florida in 2008. >> Walt Kirk, Illinois ’43, had his University of Illinois basketball jersey – No. 14 – retired on Sept. 13, 2008. Kirk was a 1945 First Team All-American. His jersey was retired as part of the first 30 basketball jerseys in the history of the school. Bill Erickson, Illinois ’47, also had his jersey retired. >> Bob Pease, Rose-Hulman ’77, has been named president and chief executive officer of Motiva Enterprises LLC, a refining and marketing join venture owned by affiliates of Shell and Saudi Aramco. >> Jimmy Jackson, Oklahoma State ’78, Brother Jackson was a three-time NCAA wrestling champion during his four years on the OSU wrestling team, 19751978. Jackson was a member of the 2007 induction class of the Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Honor. >> Ambassador Roy Huffington, Southern Methodist ’35, Huffington was one of just four recipients of the Alpha Tau Omega Distinguished Alumnus Award for outstanding achievement in his field and dedication to Alpha Tau Omega. Huffington founded HuffCo, an oil and natural gas exploration company and served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria.
