Content was developed based on the 2012 consensus report on the same subject issued
by the American Diabetes Association and the American Geriatrics Society.
Upon completion of this self-assessment program, participants should be able to:
■ Individualize diabetes management in the older adult, accounting for agerelated and health-status factors and patient preferences.
■ Discuss best practices to avoid adverse events associated with excessive or
insufficient blood pressure or glucose control.
■ Select drugs appropriate for patients with chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and other diseases associated with advancing age.
■ Assess the challenges of caring for an older adult in a hospital or nursing
home setting.

Program on the Management of Hyperglycemia in Type 2
Diabetes: a Patient-Centered approach
This self-assessment program consists of clinical problem-solving questions and educational critiques. It is designed to objectively assess and strengthen your knowledge
of diabetes and provide you with a better understanding of working with patients with
type 2 diabetes.
Content was based on the 2012 position statement of the same title of the American
Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
Upon completion of this self-assessment program, participants should be able to:
■ Discuss the pathophysiology and disease progression of diabetes.
■ Identify the best treatment pharmacotherapy strategy for patients with hyperglycemia.
■ Apply appropriate treatment strategies for patients with diabetes and hyperglycemia.
■ Incorporate treatment strategies to minimize and manage hypoglycemia in
patients with type 2 diabetes on insulin.
■ Utilize the guidelines for management of diabetes in order to achieve lower
A1C levels and reduce the risk of hyperglycemia.
■ Avoid adverse outcomes associated with hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
