The events coincided with the program's annual Diabetes Clinic, which takes place around the time the community makes New Year's healthy-living resolutions. Activities were planned for all ages and were a great success. The SDPI continues to provide Indian health programs and tribal communities with the resources and tools they need to prevent and treat diabetes. It funds nearly 400 community-based programs, enabling local tribes and health programs to set priorities that fit their communities. For over a decade Congress has provided funding for the SDPI, and the American Diabetes Association has played an integral part in advocating for this important program. The Association, including the Awakening the Spirit Subcommittee, will continue its strong support of the SDPI. executive Director of Preventive Health Partnership Named On September 16, Joanne Pike, DrPH, became executive director of the Preventive Health Partnership (PHP), a collaboration between the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. This joint initiative aims to increase the application of effective public health and clinical interventions to reduce tobacco use, poor diet, and insufficient physical activity while expanding the use of screening tests for early detection. Pike will provide strategic direction, leadership, and management to position the PHP as a leader on prevention issues. Pike joins the PHP from the American Cancer Society (ACS), where she worked for more than thirteen years. Most recently, she served as ACS's vice president for mission product, integration and channels, overseeing strategic product development, research, and integration of evidence-based mission products into national outreach strategies and programs. Pike received her doctorate in public health from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association founded the PHP in 2004. Through PHP advocacy efforts, the three organizations are providing key policy and media stakeholders with resources that highlight the global burden of noncommunicable diseases-including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic respiratory diseases-and the need for coordinated interventions, technical assistance, and support. Joanne Pike, DrPH, the new head of the Preventive Health Partnership. New Resource for California Health Care Providers The American Diabetes Association won a huge victory this summer for California schoolchildren with diabetes. The California Supreme Court unanimously ruled that California state law allows trained school staff members who are not licensed health care professionals to administer insulin to students with diabetes. The court's decision made it clear that state law does not block children with diabetes from receiving the proper care and insulin they need to be healthy and medically safe in the school setting. The association has created a new resource for California health care professionals explaining the court's decision and providing guidance on how you can help to make sure your patients' diabetes needs are met at school: The California Supreme Court Decision on Students with Diabetes: What Diabetes Health Care Providers Need to Know. You are also encouraged to share the information below with parents/guardians of your patients with diabetes to make sure they take the necessary steps to see that their children are Safe at School: ■ The California School Diabetes Care Lawsuit: Questions and Answers for California Parents and Guardians ■ Important Information for Parents/Guardians of California Students with Diabetes Find all three documents at diabetes.org/caschoollitigation. 4 http://www.diabetes.org/caschoollitigation
