These recommendations are among the most recent changes to the Association's "Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes," published in a supplement to the January 2015 issue of Diabetes Care. IN THIS ISSUE Winner of John Pipe Voices for Change Award Announced 2 Free Online CME/CE Programs Available The Standards are updated annually to provide the best possible guidance to health care professionals for diagnosing and treating people with all forms of diabetes. Revisions are based on the most current scientific evidence, which is rigorously reviewed by the Association's multidisciplinary Professional Practice Committee. 5 TH E J OU R N AL OF C L I N ICAL A N D A P P LI ED R E SEA RC H AN D ED UCATI ON VOLUME 38 | SUPPLEMENT 1 WWW.DIABETES.ORG/DIABETESCARE JANUARY 2015 A M E R I C A N D I A B E T E S A S S O C I AT I O N LEME 1 T 12 PP N Pathway to Stop Diabetes Awardees Announced SU 75th Scientific Sessions to Be Held in Boston in June 8 STANDARDS OF MEDICAL CARE IN DIABETES-2015 "The big change here is to recommend starting either moderate- or high-intensity statins based on the patient's risk profile rather than on LDL level," Grant said, "Since all patients with diabetes are at increased risk, it is just a matter of deciding whom to start on moderate- versus high-intensity statin doses." Last year's ACC/AHA recommendations for cardiovascular risk management set up an algorithm to determine when to prescribe the use of the cholesterol-lowering medications called statins. Under this treatment scheme, the vast majority of people with diabetes would receive statin therapy. Until now, the Association has not responded to these guidelines or commented on their appropriateness for people with diabetes, who are much more likely than those without diabetes to have a heart attack or stroke. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number-one killer of people with diabetes. Because people with diabetes are already at high risk for heart disease, the revised Standards call for all people with diabetes to take statins, said Richard W. Grant, MD, MPH, a Kaiser Permanente research scientist and Chair of the Professional Practice Committee. They recommend moderate-dose statin therapy for people with diabetes continued on page 2 PROFESSIONAL.DIABETES.ORG http://PROFESSIONAL.DIABETES.ORG http://PROFESSIONAL.DIABETES.ORG
