Together 2 Goal Diabetes Symposium: An ADA/AMGA Collaboration
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the AMGA
Foundation teamed up on September 13 to host more than 100
leaders in diabetes care at a daylong symposium in Indianapolis,
IN, to share best practices for improving the care of people living
with type 2 diabetes.
Leadership from health systems
and medical groups nationwide convened to explore how they
can implement ADA's Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes in
practice within the campaign's three planks: adopting a treatment algorithm, assessing and addressing risk of cardiovascular
disease, and integrating emotional and behavioral support.
This symposium was a part of the AMGA Foundation's Diabetes:
Together 2 Goal® campaign, which seeks to improve care for one
million people living with type 2 diabetes by 2019. As a part of
the Together 2 Goal® campaign, 150 AMGA member medical
groups and health systems have committed to adopting one or
more of these planks. ADA has been a campaign partner since
Together 2 Goal® started in 2016.
"Together 2 Goal® is convening the members of associations like
ADA and organizations like AMGA to tackle this epidemic using
data-driven methods based on our Standards of Care to improve
patient outcomes," said ADA Chief Scientific, Medical and
Mission Officer William Cefalu, MD. "Through partnerships like
this, we will be able to make a difference in this disease."

Attendees heard from some of the nation's leading voices in
diabetes care management, including Deloris Ann BerrienJones, MD, of Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI;
Frank Colangelo, MD, FACP, of Premier Medical Associates in
Monroeville, PA; ADA Professional Practice Committee member
Jim Dudl, MD, of Kaiser Permanente in La Jolla, CA; John W.
Kennedy, MD, of Geisinger Health System in Danville, PA; ADA
Past President David G. Marrero, PhD, of the University of
Arizona Health Sciences in Tucson, AZ; and Diabetes Forecast
Editor-in-Chief Paris Roach, MD, of the Indiana University
School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN.
Attendees also learned about ADA's strategies to improve health
care quality through its Diabetes INSIDE program. ADA staff
Greg Liptak and Roy Furman, MD, PhD, presented data and
lessons learned in implementing quality improvement programs
in diabetes.
"This meeting brought together the best and brightest to confront challenges in diabetes care that no one organization can
take on alone," said Jerry Penso, MD, MBA, President and Chief
Executive Officer of the AMGA Foundation. "By combining the
scientific expertise of the ADA with the clinical and practical
expertise of AMGA membership, we were able to share the best
practices for caring for our patients with type 2 diabetes."
