The new Living a Balanced Life with Diabetes toolkit features culturally appropriate resources designed to address the psychosocial barriers to diabetes selfcare that are prevalent in tribal communities. These barriers include denial and depression. Providers can use the toolkit’s many resources separately or package them together, as appropriate, for patients and caregivers. Below are descriptions of some of the toolkit’s main components. Patient Tip Sheets Five patient tip sheets developed specifically for the toolkit focus on youth and depression, diabetes and self-esteem, depression and eating behaviors, alcohol and smoking, and resources for family members. Book and Audio CD the Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention and the CDC Native Diabetes Wellness Program. Mora addresses myths about diabetes and describes how she progressed from denial and depression to hope and wellness. Health for Native Life Articles Using Our Wit and Wisdom to Live Well with Diabetes, available as a book and an audio CD, was written by Barbara Mora, Paiute/Dinè, in association with Four articles from Health for Native Life magazine, published continued on page 13 New Materials for Helping American Indians and Alaska Natives With Diabetes L iving a Balanced Life with Diabetes: A Toolkit Addressing Psychosocial Issues for American Indian and Alaska Native Peoples is now available for health care professionals who have American Indian and Alaska Native patients dealing with diabetes and emotional issues. The American Diabetes Association, through its Native American Initiatives staff and volunteers, is helping distribute and promote awareness of the free toolkit, which was developed by the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), a federal program jointly sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health.
