Action Briefs ■ ADA and the American Heart Association (AHA) have released a scientific statement on the use of nonnutritive sweeteners in the United States. A follow-up to AHA’s recommendation to reduce consumption of added sugars, the new statement addresses nonnutritive sweeteners’ potential to help people reach and maintain a healthy body weight, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity. The statement focuses on six widely used sweeteners regulated as food additives by the Food and Drug Administration. The writing group’s in-depth literature review looked at relevant data on consumer attitudes; consumption patterns; appetite, hunger, and energy intake; body weight; and components of cardiometabolic syndrome. After calling for further research in several areas, the statement concludes that there are insufficient data to determine whether use of these sweeteners to replace caloric sweeteners reduces intake of added sugars or carbohydrates, or has clear beneficial health effects. However, the statement notes, some data suggest that substituting nonnutritive sweeteners for added sugars may result in modest energy-intake reductions and weight loss. The statement appears in the August issues of Diabetes Care and Circulation. ■ Last fall, ADA and the American Association of Diabetes Educators convened a broadbased task force to review the national standards for diabetes self-management education, which are updated every five years. The group—which included clinical experts, researchers, nurses, dietitians, and people with diabetes— revised the standards based on current evidence and expert consensus. The standards will be published jointly in Diabetes Care and Diabetes Educator, most likely in November. ▲ 15 http://diabetes.org/safeatschool http://diabetes.org/safeatschool
