continued from page 2 The Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes was presented to Pierre J. Lefèbvre, MD, PhD, FRCP, MAE, emeritus professor of medicine in the Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Disorders Unit at the University of Liège, Belgium. A founding member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, a past president of the International Diabetes Federation, and the current chairman of the board of the World Diabetes Foundation, Lefèbvre has championed the cause of diabetes globally throughout his career. This year’s winner of the Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology was Knut Borch-Johnsen, MD, PhD, professor and research director at the Research Center for Quality Health Care, Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, Odense. Recognized internationally as an outstanding researcher in diabetes epidemiology, he was a major contributor to the literature that led to consensus on the inclusion of HbA1c in the diagnostic criteria. Borch-Johnsen’s award lecture, “The Diabetes ‘Epidemic’—How We Epidemiologists Misled the World,” presented a counterintuitive argument that the increase of diabetes prevalence is not an epidemic, but is instead a public health success, mainly because better diabetes treatment is allowing people to live longer with the disease. This year, the Association bestowed on Samuel Rahbar, MD, PhD, a special one-time National Scientific Achievement Award that bears his name, the Samuel Rahbar Outstanding Discovery Award, in recognition of his discovery of HbA1c as a marker of glycemic status in patients with diabetes. Currently distinguished professor of diabetes in the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at City of Hope in Duarte, Calif., Rahbar continues to make valuable contributions in diabetes research through his work on glycation and advanced glycation end products. Lawrence Fisher, PhD, director of the Behavioral Diabetes Research Group in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, received the Behavioral Medicine and Psychology Interest Group Award Lecture. In his award lecture, “Diabetes Distress and Depression—Unexpected Lessons,” Fisher advised diabetes clinicians to balance the use of online and phone-based diabetes selfmanagement technology with excellent clinical care that addresses the entire patient, including his or her feelings, expectations, and beliefs about diabetes management. The Edwin Bierman Award Lecture, which honors a scientist in the field of diabetes macrovascular complications, went to Ronald M. Krauss, MD, senior scientist and director of atherosclerosis research at Children’s Hospital Oakland (Calif.) Research Institute, and adjunct professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of California, Berkeley. Krauss delivered the award lecture “Dissecting Dietary Determinants of Atherogenic Dyslipidemia.” The Norbert Frienkel Award Lecture for outstanding contributions to research and/or clinical care in the field of diabetes pregnancy went to E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor, dean of the School of Medicine, and vice president for medical affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Reece delivered an award lecture titled “Unraveling the Bio-Molecular Mechanisms of Diabetes-Induced Birth Defects.” The Roger Pecoraro Award Lecture recognizes a researcher who has demonstrated an untiring commitment to understanding, detecting, treating, and preventing diabetic foot complications. This year’s honoree was Benjamin A. Lipsky, MD, FACP, FIDSA, FRCP, professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, and director of the primary care clinic at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle. Lipsky lectured on “Diabetic Foot Infections: Progress in a Pedestrian Problem.” ▲ Interest Group Lectureship Awardees The following four Interest Group Award Lectures were presented during the 72nd Scientific Sessions: Professional Section Quarterly 5
