Research News New Progress Report Deadlines and Upcoming Final Report Reminder T o streamline the award renewal process, the American Diabetes Association has modified the submission deadlines for annual progress report forms. The scientific portion of the progress report is now due two months before the end of the award holder’s current funding cycle. The financial portion reflecting year-end expenses is due 30 days after the close of the funding period. Award holders with a July 1 start date must submit their annual scientific reports by May 1 and the financial portions by August 1. Award holders with a January 1 start date must submit their scientific reports by November 1 and the financial portions by February 1. As a reminder, cumulative final report forms for award holders with a June 30, 2013 end date must be submitted by September 1, 2013. Any unused funds must also be returned by September 1. Progress and final report forms will be made available online via the Association’s Grant Management site approximately one month before the relevant deadline. As the reporting deadline approaches, investigators will receive an e-mail notification with portal access details and instructions. Forms submitted via e-mail will no longer be accepted. If you have any questions about submitting reports, please e-mail grantadministration @diabetes.org or visit profes sional.diabetes.org/grants-admin. Professional Section Quarterly Grant Opportunity Announcements Pathway to Stop Diabetes: A Radical New Road for Research To accelerate the research needed to discover solutions to and ultimately end the deadly diabetes epidemic, the Association has launched a bold new initiative, Pathway to Stop Diabetes. With a goal of funding 100 new diabetes investigators over the next decade, Pathway will support creative scientists who are just starting their careers in diabetes research, or who are already established in another field but want to expand their focus to diabetes research. Through individual awards of up to $1.625 million, Pathway will provide researchers with the freedom and autonomy to pursue innovative ideas and transformational approaches. Pathway seeks to bring new perspectives to diabetes research by supporting innovative basic, clinical, translational, epidemiological, or health services research that is relevant to any type of diabetes, diabetes-related disease state, or complication. The Association is currently accepting nominations for Pathway awards through our inaugural Call for Nominations. ■ The nomination may be submitted in either of the Pathway award types: Diabetes Research Career Initiator ■ ■ ■ Two-phased funding designed to support the transition from trainee to independent investigator. Candidates must currently be in research training positions and have no more than seven years of training following their terminal doctoral degree. Research support: – Phase 1 (mentored): up to $100,000 per year over two years. – Phase 2 (independent): up to $325,000 per year over five years. The maximum funding level for the seven-year period of the award is $1.625 million. Diabetes Research Accelerator ■ Nomination Guidelines ■ Nominations will be accepted from U.S. accredited and nonprofit research institutions. ■ Each institution may nominate a maximum of one investigator per grant cycle. ■ Individual components of multicomponent organizations are considered independent institutions. (For more specific information on institution defi- nitions, please e-mail grants administration@diabetes.org or see the Pathway FAQ page at professional.diabetes.org /grants-pathway.) Nominations of candidates in diverse disciplines—from medicine, biology, and chemistry, to engineering, mathematics, and physics—are encouraged. Available to individuals with fulltime faculty research positions and established records of independent research productivity. There are two distinct categories: – Early-career diabetes investigators. Candidates may have independent research support up to and including an R01. Individuals who have received an R01 renewal or a second R01 are not eligible. continued on page 14 13 http://professional.diabetes.org/grants-pathway http://professional.diabetes.org/grants-pathway http://professional.diabetes.org/grants-admin http://professional.diabetes.org/grants-admin
