Yet despite the disease’s epidemic proportions, diabetes research is still critically underfunded. Although researchers have made significant strides, continued progress will depend on adequate funding. To accelerate the research needed to discover solutions and ultimately end this deadly epidemic, the Association is launching a bold new initiative, Pathway to Stop Diabetes. With a goal of funding 100 new diabetes researchers over the next decade, Pathway will provide crucial support to individuals focusing on innovative ideas and transformational approaches. Thanks to over $7 million in generous gifts from individuals donors and $20 million in founding corporate support from Sanofi, Novo Nordisk Inc., and the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, the Association is launching the initial Pathway call for nominations in March 2013. Pathway will support creative scientists who are just starting their careers in diabetes research—or who are already established in another field but want to expand their focus to diabetes research. continued on page 2 Clinical News ADA’s 2013 Clinical Practice Recommendations T he 2013 update of the American Diabetes Association’s Clinical Practice Recommendations—the most authoritative resource for the diagnosis and treatment of all types of diabetes—has been published as a supplement to the January issue of Diabetes Care. (See care.diabetesjour nals.org/content/36/Supplement _1.) The Clinical Practice Recommendations include disciplinary Professional Practice Committee. The Standards recommend screening, diagnostic, and therapeutic actions “known or believed to favorably affect health outcomes of patients with diabetes.” Position Statement Revision and National Standards The “Diagnosis and Classification of Diabetes Mellitus” position statement received minor revisions to include new information about monogenic forms of diabetes. The previously revised National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support, published in the November 2012 issue of Diabetes Care, are reprinted in the updated Clinical Practice Recommendations. Revised Standards of Medical Care selected position statements and the latest Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, which are reviewed and revised annually by the Association’s multi- Revisions to the Standards incorporate many small changes related to new evidence that has emerged in the past year, as well as clarifications of previous recommendations.
