Professional Section Quarterly - Winter 2013 - (Page 2)
continued from page 1
Through individual awards of $1.625 million over
the course of five to seven years, Pathway will allow
researchers to explore new ideas and accelerate
research progress by providing resources for achieving
breakthrough discoveries:
■ Substantial, flexible financial support
■ Scientific and career mentoring from distinguished
leaders
■ Networks for collaboration and communication
■ Unique career development opportunities
Pathway will support innovative basic, clinical,
translational, epidemiological, behavioral, or health
services research relevant to any diabetes type, diabetes-related disease state, or diabetes complication.
Nominations
Pathway candidates will be identified through nominations from U.S.-accredited academic and nonprofit
research institutions. Such institutions may nominate
a maximum of three investigators per grant cycle, one
in each award type:
■ Diabetes Research Career Initiator
■ Diabetes Research Accelerator – Early Career
Investigators
■ Diabetes Research Accelerator – Established
Investigators New to Diabetes Research
The Association seeks exceptional nominees from a
broad range of disciplines, including medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and mathematics.
Phase 1 will support up to two years at up to
$100,000/year (including 10% indirect costs) for
mentored research training to allow investigators to
complete ongoing research, publish results, receive
additional training, and develop independent
research plans.
■ Phase 2 will support five years at up to
$325,000/year (including 30% indirect costs) for
independent research pending receipt and approval
of documentation verifying that:
– the candidate has obtained a faculty appointment at an accredited research institution;
– the institution has agreed to provide adequate laboratory space for performing the proposed research
and adequate time (75%) to dedicate to research;
– the institution provides the candidate with an
adequate start-up package.
■
Diabetes Research Accelerator Award
These awards are available to individuals with established records of independent productivity in research
in two distinct categories:
■ Early-career diabetes investigators proposing innovative and ambitious diabetes-related research programs. Applicants must hold full-time faculty positions and may hold independent National Institutes
of Health (NIH) funding (NIH K or R awards,
including an initial R01), but must not have
applied for, or received, an R01 renewal or a second R01 award.
■ Established investigators holding full-time faculty
positions and working in fields other than diabetes
research. Such candidates should have a strong
interest in applying their expertise to diabetesrelated research topics, and cannot have received
previous national grant support in diabetes research.
Pathway Awards
Diabetes Research Career Initiator Award
These awards are available to individuals who have
distinguished themselves during their research training as exceptionally promising
research investigators with a high
likelihood of making seminal
contributions in diabetes
research. Eligible applicants
must currently be in research
training positions (postdoctoral
fellow, research fellowship), with
no more than seven years of
training since their terminal doctoral degree.
Awards will provide two phases
of research support: Phase 1 for mentored training
and Phase 2 for independent research. Combined
support for Phase 1 and Phase 2 may total up to
$1,625,000.
2
Awards will provide up to $325,000/year (including
30% indirect costs) of research support for up to five
years.
Mentorship and Collaboration
Pathway scientists will be selected by a Mentor
Advisory Group—eminent scientists who will seek candidates with the core elements for exceptional science:
rigorous thought processes, keen intellect, and the
capacity for innovation and creativity.
In addition to participating in the selection process,
the Mentor Advisors will provide ongoing scientific and
career advice and Pathway scientists will have opportunities to participate in special symposia and speaking
engagements, and to utilize technology designed to
foster interactions and collaborations. Pathway will create a challenging and collaborative environment in
which transformative science can thrive. For more
