American Meteorological Society Demo - (Page 2) EYEING THE STORM AAI’S AEROSONDE AIRCRAFT: UNMANNED HURRICANE HUNTER ® Interface between the near-surface, high-wind environment of air and sea is critical in hurricane dynamics, but too risky for manned aircraft to observe directly. In November 2007, the Aerosonde unmanned aircraft spent 7.5 hours navigating Hurricane Noel’s eye and boundary layer in wind gusts up to 64 knots, and from as low as 300 feet above the ocean. The mission, totaling more than 17 hours, set records for duration and data gathered. Data transmitted to NASA and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from the Aerosonde aircraft during this and other missions will result in improved forecasting – protecting lives and minimizing economic impact.
