True, the Interior and Far North regions can be sub-zero in winter, but the rest of the state enjoys a maritime climate. Mild winters average in the low 20’s and summers hover in the high 60’s. Throughout the summer, the climate in Anchorage is similar to San Francisco’s spring weather with an average high of 65° F. Winter brings snow with temperatures ranging from 34° to 10° F, creating a climate very much like ski resorts in Canada, the rocky Mountains, or europe. A good pair of walking shoes and warm socks are appropriate for all seasons. Anchorage’s informality makes casual wear welcome virtually everywhere. Bikeseeing: Low Impact Tourism, High Impact Rewards Along 155 miles (249 km) of paved recreational trails within Anchorage, are marshes populated with foraging moose, fresh mountain streams, lagoons and coastal bluffs offering spectacular views of ocean and mountain ranges. More trails parallel the Seward and Glenn Highways, arriving in the valley communities of eagle river (north), and Girdwood (south). The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is an 11-mile (18 km) stretch that starts in downtown Anchorage, travels along the Cook Inlet coast past Ted Steven’s Anchorage International Airport and ends at Kincaid park – Anchorage’s prime moose-viewing spot. The trail is accessible at many points and nearby bike rental shops offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. Visitors can check bags and enjoy a short ride before departure. Bag storage is available at the airport as an alternate option. Bike tour and rental operators offer guided and self-guided tours along with a range of specialty bikes and accessories; tag-a-longs, trailers, tandems and even motorized electric bikes for those who need a little extra help up the hills.
