SpecialReport: Well Stimulation & Completion Technology
FIGURE 2 Conversion of Invert Emulsion to Direct Emulsion In this phase of the assessment, two breaker systems were considered. Researchers theorized that an optimal system could be formulated with either a brinebased glycol acid precursor (A-GAP) or an invert emulsion glycol acid precursor (I-GAP). Reversible RDF System The reversible RDF system selected for the project was developed to promote the highly effective and trouble-free drilling characteristic of an oil-based drilling fluid with the completion simplicity of its aqueous-based counterpart. The RDF system has the capacity to convert easily from an invert emulsion to a direct emulsion system comprising an oil-in-water continuous phase (Figure 2). Reversibility is accomplished simply by using an acid-based fluid to change the pH of the system. Consequently, a risk assessment for choosing between an OBM to enhance drilling performance or a water-based mud to lessen the risk of completion impairment is mitigated with one system. As with conventional OBM, the RIRDF system delivers comparatively superior drilling characteristics, including inhibition, lubricity and torque reduction, which are primary requirements for extended-reach wells. Once drilling is complete, the system is switched to a low-pH fluid that alters the surface wetting characteristic of solids, effectively converting the deposited filter cake from an oil-wet to a water-wet state. This process is referred to as protonation-deprotonation of the amine surfactant. The conversion to water-wet takes place without any significant increase in viscosity, which is a common issue with conventional invert-emulsion drilling systems. The RI-RDF system provides the ability to control the wettability process during the drilling and completion phases, thereby preserving all the drilling advantages of an OBM and the completion, displacement and cleanup benefits of an aqueous-based fluid. This ability to control the conversion process depends indirectly on the concentration of the reversible emulsifier and the excess lime. The key to the RI-RDF system is a unique surfactant package that functions as an acid-based chemical switch, allowing the conversion from water-in-oil emulsion to oil-in-water emulsion. The surfactant package forms an invert emulsion in the presence of lime and a

tervene and control injection where necessary. The operator also intended for the two OPP injection wells to advance understanding of injection and production interaction in extended-reach viscous oil reservoirs. To meet the field development objectives, the operator identified a number of drilling and completion targets, including: • Drilling the horizontal section without the nonproductive time associated with losses, differential sticking or excessive dog legs; • Reducing friction factors to permit effective drilling of the lateral section and subsequent installation of the liner and completion assembly; • Allowing direct injection after the completion phase with no flow back required; and • Degrading and dissolving the residual filter cake and removing any skin that could impair the injection or potentially plug the liner. Accordingly, much of the upfront planning centered on selecting and optimizing the reservoir drill-in fluid and developing a specially designed breaker system. The initial laboratory assessment concentrated on selecting a compatible RDF that could provide optimal hole cleaning, enhance penetration rates, mitigate losses and deliver low torque factors. However, the predominate challenge was optimizing the selected RDF so the residual filter cake could be dissolved at relatively low temperature (85 degrees F) without im-

pairing the lower completion hardware and/or the onset of injection. Since extended reach dictates the use of an oil-based fluid to reduce friction and enhance the drilling rate, the initial laboratory evaluation included two RDF systems: a conventional invert emulsion system, and a novel reversible invert reservoir drill-in fluid (RI-RDF). The assessment concluded that the uniquely engineered FAZEPRO™ reversible invert emulsion RDF offered the best choice for meeting all the drilling and precompletion objectives. Complementing the selection of the novel RI-RDF was assessing the formulation of a well-specific breaker system, which is critical for the complete degradation and dissolution of the subsequent filter cake. Furthermore, the capacity to spot the breaker system in the open hole prior to running the 51⁄2-inch slotted liner and the 31⁄2-inch inner string assemblies would yield considerable savings. Therefore, the breaker system would have to provide low friction and delayed reaction, thereby enabling both assemblies to be run to TD without significant losses or any hindrance to the completion process. Moreover, the breaker system would require compatibility with the OA Cretaceous sand as well as prevent plugging of the slotted liner. If successful, this approach would promote direct injection by alleviating the need for temporary flow back or intervention to clean up and dissolve the filter cake.
