ning the inner completion string for the subsequent OI07-04 remained a constant 0.2 inside the 95⁄8-inch casing. However, the factor increased to 0.4 upon entering the 51⁄2-inch liner, but quickly decreased to 0.25 and remained at this value until total depth. These values contributed largely to the trouble-free running of this string. The OI11-01 was the first to be completed. Once drilling reached TD, the open hole was circulated clean using seven complete circulations while tripping to the casing shoe and back to total depth. This operation simulated a “dummy run” to confirm there were no tight spots or hole collapses that could prevent the liner from running to TD. However, a hole opener was used to prepare for the running of the lower completion assemblies, thus the original filter cake was removed and subsequently redeposited. A total of 339 barrels of I-GAP breaker was placed in the open hole 200 feet above the casing shoe. No losses occured while the I-GAP breaker was pumped head-to-head with the RI-RDF system. The RI-RDF system was displaced at four-five bbl/minute while rotating and reciprocating the drill pipe. After placement of the breaker system, losses averaged four-five bbl/hour for 10 hours. After this period, losses decreased to two-four bbl/hour with a total of 98 barrels lost over 24 hours. Taking into account these losses and the metal displacement for the lower completion assemblies, this equates to 90 percent coverage of the open hole using the I-GAP system. The completion assemblies were run to total depth with no excess torque or problems. The OI07-04 completion was initiated without the use of a hole opener, but a dummy run was performed with the drilling assembly. The I-GAP system was displaced head-to-head with the RI-RDF in the open hole. This breaker system was formulated to a density 0.2 pounds/gallon greater than the RI-RDF to mitigate the U-tube effect during placement. The breaker system was displaced to 200 feet above the casing shoe using an increased rate of six bbl/minute while rotating and reciprocating the drill pipe. This displacement included approximately 8.5 percent by volume excess I-GAP to account for seepage losses. During spotting of the breaker, no appreciable losses were detected. Over the next two days, the losses averaged a modest four-five 5 bbl/hour during the first 10 hours, reducing to fewer than three bbl/hour thereafter. This yielded a total of 126 barrels lost over two days. After running both lower completion assemblies, the operator displaced the casing with completion brine. Taking into account these losses and the metal displacement for the lower completion assemblies, this equates to 100 percent coverage. This metal displacement increased the breaker volume in the casing annulus. The ensuing displacement with brine showed returns to the surface yielding a relatively small volume of I-GAP breaker on surface. It was concluded the residual RI-RDF filter cake was contacted along the entire length of the open hole with the breaker system. After the 81⁄2-inch horizontal sections for the OI11-01 and OI07-04 wells were drilled trouble-free to target lengths of 4,605 and 6,723 feet, respectively, the completion assemblies were run to TD free of trouble and with no severe losses.
MARC KUCK is a senior completions engineer with Eni U.S. Operating Company in Anchorage, Ak. During his 31 years at M-I, he has developed many drilling fluid products and systems. Patel has 64 U.S. patents. Prior to MI, he taught at Texas A&M University and did post-doctoral research at Fox Chase Cancer Research Center. He holds a B.S. in chemistry from M.S. University in Baroda, India, an M.S. in

Consequently, both injection wells were completed with no fluid-related nonproductive time. The OI11-01 and OI07-04 wells were placed on line in April 2011. Both wells demonstrated surface injection pressures of less than 500 psi through August (Figures 4A and 4B). Their corresponding downhole pressures remained constant over this same period. The daily injection rates began in the range of 400-500 barrels of water a day, and were increased later, corresponding to their adjacent producers, to maintain the planned voidage replacement ratio.
