Allmand Offers Upgrade To Its Maxi-Heat System
HOLDREGE, NE.–Allmand Bros. Inc. has upgraded its Maxi-Heat portable heater with greater total fuel capacity. The Allmand Maxi-Heat MH-1000 heater trailers now feature three smaller molded polymer fuel tanks instead of a single large steel tank, the company says. The new fuel tank system has one 50gallon engine supply tank and two 100gallon heater supply tanks. Allmand says the nearly 60-gallon increase will provide more than 30 hours of continuous operation without refueling. As an added benefit, the company points out, the new molded polymer tanks are corrosion resistant. In addition, it says the lighter material reduces the trailer’s overall weight, partially offsetting the weight added by the increased fuel capacity. The new units also offer in-line fuel heaters and prefilters for the fuel system, the company adds. With the reduced capacity of the individual tanks less than 118 gallons, Allmand says the trailer is under the fuel capacity limits of Transport Canada regulations, meaning no initial or subsequent tank certifications are needed for tanks operated in Canada. Maxi-Heat features twin heater units that produce a maximum of 1.01 million Btus that may be operated independently, depending on heating requirements, the company says. A standard 1,800 rpm liquid-cooled Isuzu 3CD or optional CAT C1.5 diesel engine with regulated generator provides power for the heater and electrical accessories, Allmand reports. Vallourec, Sumitomo Plan Ohio Mill Merger
YOUNGSTOWN, OH.–V&M Star and V&M Two, the small-diameter rolling mill under construction next to the V&M Star mill in Youngstown, will merge in 2012. Through a transaction concluded in September, Sumitomo Corp. purchased 19.47 percent of V&M Two shares from Vallourec, the companies report, aligning Sumitomo’s interest in V&M Two to the same level at V&M Star. Prior to this transaction, Vallourec owned 100 percent of V&M Two, while V&M Star ownership was shared between Vallourec (80.53 percent) and Sumitomo (19.47 percent). The companies say the move will strengthen industrial synergies and integration between the two pipe mills. r

New High-Speed Engine To Power Offshore Rigs
SEYMOUR, IN.–Cummins Inc. announces its new QSK95 engine will be configured as a ready-to-install offshore drilling power module (ODPM) with a 2.1 megawatt output. As the world’s most powerful highspeed diesel, Cummins says the 95liter, 16-cylinder QSK95 enables the ODPM to generate dependable prime power with high-load factor capability. The engine is rated 3,000 horsepower at 1,200 revolutions a minute to align with a standard ODPM output node used for moored semisubmersible drilling rigs, jackup rigs, drill ships, and floating and gravity-based production platforms, the company reports. The QSK95 generates its power with only 16 cylinders, not the 20 traditionally required by high-speed diesels, Cummins continues. The company adds that compared with medium-speed engines, the QSK95 reduces space envelopes as much as 40 percent, with as much as 33 percent less weight. According to the company, the QSK95 has the strength to provide maximum power for long periods or handle sudden overloads. The company says the engine’s common-rail system, which offers as much as 2,200-bar high-pressure fuel injection, results in smoother, quieter and more fuel-efficient operations. “With drilling rigs and platforms using as many as six power modules, the reduced space and higher fuel efficiency of the QSK95 prime mover provide a clear advantage,” says Erik Drewry, director of Cummins’ oil and gas business. “Operators also can expect to see higher levels of uptime than they have experienced from an ODPM generating 2.1 megawatts.” Drewry says the ODPM will meet EPA Tier 4 emission regulations using Cummins’ selective catalytic reduction technology. SCR barely alters the module’s envelope and does not change its cooling or ventilation requirements, allowing the module to retain its global applicability, Drewry reports. He adds that SCR reduces operating costs by saving fuel. For information, visit www.cumminsengines.com. Ì

Summit Midstream Wins Investment For Projects
HOUSTON–GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of GE, is expanding its oil and gas industry footprint by investing in Summit Midstream Partners LLC, which acquires and develops midstream energy infrastructure in unconventional North American production basins. GE Energy Financial Services says its midstream equity and debt portfolio totals $2.4 billion, with investments in a midstream master limited partnership as well as gas storage assets, an LNG regasification terminal and 40,000 miles of gas pipelines. The company adds it also is involved in oil and gas production, from partnerships that own reserves to production platforms. Summit Midstream’s assets include gathering, compression and dehydration facilities in the core of the Barnett Shale, GE Energy Financial Services indicates. In addition, it reports it has acquired South Piceance Basin assets in the Rockies from an Encana Corp. subsidiary. Its Barnett asset is a large gas-gathering system near Arlington, Tx., consisting of 120 miles of pipeline and nearly 50,000 horsepower of compression. The Piceance acquisition consists of 260 miles of pipeline and 90,000 horsepower of compression serving customers under longterm contracts, the company reports. After completion of the Piceance acquisition, Summit will transport 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day. r

This offshore drilling power module generates 2.1 megawatts using the QSK95 engine, which Cummins describes as the most powerful high-speed diesel in the world. Its 16 cylinders deliver 3,000 horsepower at 1,200 revolutions a minute. According to the company, the QSK95 offers great efficiency, high uptimes, and a compact space envelope.
