SpecialReport: International Opportunities
3-D inversion, and basin modeling, but getting an accurate interpretation relies on getting a high-quality data set.” All geological and geophysical analyses are conducted at Anadarko’s headquarters in The Woodlands. “The best way to support our simultaneous global activities is to have a centralized team,” Patterson comments. “That way, we can put the right specialists on each job and the team members can pool their expertise far more productively.” Windjammer And Barquentine Anadarko’s first discovery in the Rovuma Basin was Windjammer, where the discovery well reached total depth of 16,930 in March 2010, finding 555 feet of pay. Although the second well (the Collier prospect) found noncommercial quantities of gas, it was followed by eight successful wells. In all, 12 exploration and appraisal wells have been drilled, including two dry holes and one well that had to be abandoned because of mechanical issues. To accelerate the drilling and field development program, a second drill ship was brought onto the block, and Patterson says Anadarko plans to use the two rigs to drill seven or eight more wells this year and conduct several key flow tests. Area 1 lies within the core of an unexplored tertiary delta that is analogous to other world-class basins, such as the Niger Delta, according to Patterson. The Karoo Horst play is to the south. “A review of the data covering onshore and shallow-water areas showed predominantly fluvial delta to slope deposits trapped in extensional fault traps,” he relates. “Deepwater geology was dominated by basin floor fans trapped in compressional folds and frontal fans.” Anadarko mobilized Dolphin Drilling’s Belford Dolphin drill ship from the Gulf of Mexico to drill the exploration prospects identified from 2-D and 3-D seismic, and to test the full stratigraphic section and evaluate multiple trap styles. Within the 3-D seismic survey area, Patterson reports the company drilled four initial wells: Windjammer, Collier, Ironclad and Galleon. On Windjammer, he says, the team was surprised to find pay in the subthrust along with 480 feet of pay in the Oligocene and 75 feet in the Paleocene.

Transocean’s Deepwater Millennium is shown here conducting drill stem flow tests on the Barquentine-1 well in early May. Even with facility constraints, the well recorded a measured continuous flow of 100 MMcf/d from an Oligocene sand formation with minimal pressure drawdown.

ment plan includes a pair of 5 million ton-a-year liquefaction trains, with the capacity to expand the LNG facility to six trains. Anadarko was the first company to test the deep water offshore Mozambique and was the first to explore in the northern part of the country. Consequently, Patterson says part of the challenge is building support infrastructure from the ground up, including a workforce. “Mozambicans are working hard to come up to speed, and the government is very responsive and supportive,” he remarks. “Early on, we established an office in the capital city, Maputo, for logistics, accounting and other support services. We also now have offices in Pemba, Palma and Mocímboa da Praia. Wherever possible, we hire and train nationals and augment with specialty skills.” Although there had been limited activity on the Mozambican Shelf, Patterson says the offshore had been largely ignored, in part, because of complications from a civil war in the 1970s80s. “We believed there was exciting potential in the area, and it was thought to be gas-prone. The nation’s stability and willingness to work with us allowed us to pursue it,” he states. Existing 2-D seismic data covered most of Area 1, but the coverage was sparse with large distances between receivers. Still, Patterson says Anadarko’s team liked what it saw. Once the contract was signed to secure the block, he says the company shot 2-D infill lines over what would become Prosperidade to confirm the geologic concepts. This was followed by the first of multiple new 3-D surveys to validate the 2-D interpretations. “One of our team members saw the original 2-D at an American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ annual convention,” notes Patterson. “This led to our investigation, evaluation, bid and investment.” One-third of the 2.6 million acres has been shot with 3-D and there are plans to cover the entire deepwater portion of Area 1 with 3-D seismic. Patterson adds that Anadarko’s exploration staff carefully coordinates and manages seismic acquisition and processing. “We have found that quality assurance and workflow techniques are critical in deep water. Three-dimensional seismic is expensive, and we want to be sure the analysis yields drill-quality results,” he relates. “We apply advanced processing and interpretation techniques, including attribute analysis,

Local schoolchildren selected the name Prosperidade (‘Prosperity’) for the Anadarko-operated Area 1 concession. The Prosperidade development complex and future LNG export facility represent a transformational opportunity for Mozambique, with the potential to generate substantial revenues for the government, long-term foreign investment, critical infrastructure and other social improvements, and employment opportunities.
