DEC Initiative Among IOGA NY Topics
HAMBURG, N.Y.-Regulatory and
legal challenges, as well as safety benefits
and financial insights will be among the
information presented at the Independent
Oil & Gas Association of New York's
annual meeting, Executive Director Brad
Gill reveals.
The event is scheduled for Oct. 21-22
at the Buffalo Marriott Niagara Hotel in
Amherst, N.Y.
"Regulations for conventional producers, including the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation's enforcement initiatives, will be
addressed," Gill reports. "Information
about the latest legal challenge against
the DEC regarding its supplemental generic environmental impact statement (on
high-volume hydraulic fracturing) also
is an agenda highlight.
"Information about how companies
actually can trim their overhead by adopting a culture of safety is another important
topic," Gill elaborates. "We also will
have a session relating to investment, acquisition and divestment opportunities."
IOGA NY's goal is to equip attendees
with tools that producers can learn to

use, not only to survive, but to thrive in a
low-price environment, the executive director notes.
"Operators need to know how to maximize their efficiency to remain solvent
and healthy, especially in a highly regulated state such as New York," Gill observes. "An accounting firm's representatives will lead a discussion to provide
important information on cost-saving
measures and investment strategies in today's oil and gas industry.
"The DEC-related speaker and the accountants, along with other speakers, will
enlighten attendees," he adds.
Beer And Bull
The Wednesday, Oct. 21, agenda includes the popular Beer and Bull reception
at 6 o'clock, Gill announces.
"This welcome reception is designed
to be an informal networking event," Gill
explains. "Attendees can mingle with
their peers during a craft beer tasting
session hosted by FX Brewing Company,
while a Buffalo Sabres hockey game is
aired on a big-screen television.
"FX Brewing, which is the oldest

brewing company in New York state,
offers a family of brands that includes
Flying Bison, Saranac and Lake Placid,"
he says. "Tim Herzog, founder of Flying
Bison Brewing Company, will be on
hand to assist in sampling several local
craft beers."
Activities on Thursday, Oct. 22, begin
at 9 a.m. with an all-day technical seminar.
The meet-and-greet reception starts at 4:30
p.m., while dinner with a keynote speaker
at 5:30 p.m. rounds out the agenda.
"We hope our members and others in
the industry will recognize the benefit of
attending our meeting," Gill emphasizes.
"The excellent content that will be presented is so important to hear today. The
networking opportunities also are invaluable.
"We will reach out to a wide array of

OOGA 'Patriot' Brings Inspiration To All

COLUMBUS, OH.-Presentation of
the Ohio Oil & Gas Association's Oilfield
Patriot Award during its annual summer
meeting, July 27, was transformed into
an inspiring experience for all when Jerry
Olds, founder and president of Solid
Rock Energy Inc., delivered one of the
most remarkable impromptu speeches
any recipient ever has given.
Following a 10-minute video of Jerry's
family, friends, and colleagues reflecting
on his distinguished career as a petroleum
geologist, and his contributions to protect,
promote, and advance the oil and gas industry, Olds accepted the award on behalf

of the "old timers," who laid the foundation
for OOGA.
"I would hate to think what the oil
and gas industry in Ohio would be like
without this association," said Olds. "My
claim to fame with the association was
that I was on the Executive Committee
when (former Executive Vice President)
Tom Stewart was hired."
Olds went on to express his gratitude
for being able to make a living doing
something he really enjoyed, with the
people he has enjoyed being around.
Then he asked, "Have you ever thought
about what the American oil and gas industry has done?"
Olds described the astonishing amount

of wealth the industry had created, not
only for those in the industry, but also
for the people who built the hotels, the
investors, the steel mills, and farmers
collecting royalty checks, etc.
"And it has been creating wealth from
the very start," he reflected. "It has been
the innovator and pusher for discovering
oil and gas in this world-from Titusville
to Burning Springs, and on to Findlay,
Spindletop, the Persian Gulf, Venezuela,
the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and
all the places in-between."
Jerry noted how the industry hadn't
only created wealth, but also had created
better lives for countless people. He described how the first oil produced was
