Inverted shrouds also have proven effective. The traditional inverted shroud
design features a hollow bottom that
allows the motor to extend out of the
bottom of the shroud to allow direct fluid
contact for cooling. The benefits of the
inverted shroud are that it provides a gasavoiding, slug-resistant system without
drilling a fixed sump. The disadvantage

Similar to an inverted shroud, artificial
sumps provide the gas managing benefits
of a wellbore sump without added drilling
and completion costs. The artificial sump
pumping (ASP) system deployed in the
Mississippian Lime case study well provides a fully enclosed ESP, complete
with a forced cooling system and debris
trap (Figure 1). In effect, the ASP is an
"ESP in a can" with a recirculation system
for motor cooling.
The shroud extends from below the
ESP to a level above the pump. The
length of the shroud varies, depending
on the desired flow rate and expected
slug duration. The typical length is 200300 feet, but there is potential for shroud
length to extend beyond 500 feet. One
consideration for determining shroud
length is that the only inlet is located at
the top of the shroud, making the top of
the shroud the equivalent pump intake
