Mobile Units Prove Ability
To Treat Oily Soil, Solids
HELENA, MT.-Drake Water Technologies reports it has demonstrated three single-load, on-site, mobile remediation technologies for oil field and refinery wastes.
These three treatment processes eliminate
the need to stabilize, haul, and landfill drill
cuttings, invert fluids, spent emulsions, slop
oil, tank bottoms, rag layers, pit residues,
and soils that are contaminated with hazardous materials, hydrocarbons, and salt
brines, DWT says. According to the company,
this significantly reduces disposal costs.

The first technology, ThermFlo, is the
cheapest means to completely decontaminate
invert drill cuttings and hydrocarbon contaminated soils to render them suitable for
unrestricted use or on-site surface application, DWT says. The company cites five
pilot tests on a variety of wastes having as
much as 110,000 milligrams/kilogram total
petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contamination. All treated solids showed "nondetect TPH" post treatment, DWT reports.
CuttFlo is a compact, low-cost thermal
desorption technology to recover clean
liquid fuels and water from "fuel-rich" feed
materials such as invert emulsions, slop

oil, spent activated carbon, and saltwater
disposal rag layers, DWT describes. The
company says a full-scale CuttFlo unit with
a throughput of four tons an hour has been
deployed to Canada.
The Cuttings Leeching System (CLS)
offers a low-cost and high-capacity way
to remediate soils and other solids contaminated with soluble salts, DWT continues. The company says a pilot CLS
system deployed near Williston, N.D.,
achieved 98 percent salt removal from
salt brine drilling wastes.
