everyone has the best information," Robertson says. "You cannot convince someone
if they are not even open to a conversation,
even if you have all the data in your favor.
But at least the oil and gas industry can
do the best job in getting the information
out and making sure everyone understands
that if people have concerns, that industry
is doing everything it can to address those
concerns and provide the right kind of
analysis to figure out how to adjust operations, if that needs to happen."
PBPA's members remain willing to
accept that responsibility, Robertson says,
because they realize they need the support
of the communities in which they work
and live. "Our members live throughout
the Permian Basin, and they have families
who live in the cities that dot the landscape.
We care about what the residents of the
Permian Basin think and about how their
lives are affected," he says.
Public Communications
Walker says PBPA is continuing its
campaign of educating those inside and
outside of the industry. He points out the
association believes in the importance of
ensuring its members understand not only
the issues such as the possibility of a
local species being listed under the Endangered Species Act or changes to silica
dust regulations, but their possible ramifications as well
"You look at all of the PBPA committees, from Health, Safety and Environment
to Regulatory Practices, Legislative in
both New Mexico and Texas, to Electric,
Water, Community Affairs, Local Issues,
and the Endangered Species Committee,
they all touch on different facets-water,
legal, financial, etc.-of the things PBPA
has to dive into as an organization so we
can give our members the information
necessary to help them do the job. If need
be, the association will collectively fight
on an issue that it believes in," he says.
Even though modest commodity prices
remain an industrywide concern, Walker
insists PBPA remains a great investment
for its member companies. He notes that
association leaders appreciate the importance of remaining focused on Permian
Basin issues across West Texas and Southeast New Mexico, while also accepting a
role in regional or national affairs.
"It is exciting to be in the hottest play
in the world right now, and that our organization is best suited to represent the
industry here in the Permian Basin,"
Walker says.

Cementing Head
