Physical hydronomics is a useful tool
for optimizing water management by
means of a combined "exergy" and economic analyses. Physical hydronomics
expresses flows in a water cycle in terms
of exergy (available energy). Exergy cost
represents the actual physical cost of performing a water cycle by accounting for
the portion of energy that is lost because
of the inefficiencies of field processes.
On the other hand, the economic cost is
determined by direct and indirect physical
costs such as the price of electricity and
maintenance costs.
A systems simulation approach is
based on the applications of the basic
principles of mass, momentum, energy
and exergy balances. For large-scale water
handling problems, it is usually implemented using a comprehensive numerical
simulation model of the reservoir, well
and surface facilities involving processing,
pipelines and storage. A facilities design
requires applying commercial simulation
software to predict the limiting conditions
and carry out sensitivity analyses. It helps
to investigate the various production scenarios for short, intermediate and long
periods of operations. It also helps to determine the effects of different engineering
options and limitations, such as land accessibility and logistics issues.

Faruk Civan is a professor emeritus
of the Mewbourne School of Petroleum
& Geological Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He formerly held the
Brian and Sandra O'Brien Presidential,
Alumni, and Martin G. Miller Chair professorships. His principal teaching and
may include advanced technologies such
as waterless stimulation techniques and
in situ water treating. Until then, operators
must focus on managing the overall water
cycle by optimizing solutions from multiple engineering, economic and environmental perspectives.

multiphase transport phenomena in
porous media; and processing, transportation, and storage of oil, gas, and
water. He is the author of two books:
"Reservoir Formation Damage: Fundamentals, Modeling, Assessment, and Mitigation" (Elsevier, 2000, 2007, 2016)
and "Porous Media Transport Phenomena" (John Wiley & Sons, 2011). He
holds a chemical engineering degree
from the Technical University of Istanbul, an M.S. in chemical engineering
from the University of Texas at Austin,
and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering
from the University of Oklahoma.
