the torque capacity, fatigue resistance
and sealability to excel in onshore gas
plays' lengthy laterals, Walsh assures.
"The series' flagship is a wedge-style
semiflush connection that leads the class
of semipremium connections in terms of
torque capacity," he says. "This integral
connection has a compression rating equal
to pipe body, which means it is ideal for
applications that traditionally use modified
buttress connections but could benefit
from a connection with a smaller outer
diameter and no coupling."
Eliminating the coupling makes the
connection less prone to damage during
make up, Walsh says. More importantly,
he continues, it provides clearance advantages and may allow the operator to
increase the casing's inner diameter, and
ultimately, increase production.
The semiflush wedge connection has
been tested with much the same rigor the
company applies off shore, Walsh relates.
"We have done extensive yield make and
break and yield torque testing as well as
sealability testing in a combined load
frame to validate its performance," he
describes. "In addition, we have put the
connection through intense third-party
fatigue testing so operators have the confidence that it can survive multistage
fracs or the string rotation that is essential
for pushing tubing into three- to fourmile laterals."
Since its introduction earlier this year,
Walsh says the semipremium wedgestyle connection has been used extensively

in the Permian Basin, as well as in the
Eagle Ford, Haynesville and DenverJulesburg. "It has performed flawlessly,"
he reports. "All the feedback we have
received from operators has been positive.
They have been particularly impressed
with how easy it is to make up; the
thread is coarse, so it takes about half
the turns as its modified buttress counterparts, which adds up to substantial rig
time savings."
For applications that do not require
as high a torque rating, the semipremium
series includes a modified buttress connection with a pin-to-pin connection that
Walsh describes as excellent for rotating
casing. A shouldered variant retains those
strengths while eliminating the need to
rotate the coupling on the mill end.
"These less-expensive connections let us
cover the entire spectrum of what may
be needed in horizontal shale wells,"
Walsh comments.
Offshore, Hunting continues to refine
its wedge-style connections for highpressure/high-temperature applications,
Walsh reports. "The next generation of
deepwater wells will require equipment
that can withstand 20,000 psi," he says.
"We have 101⁄8-inch semiflush wedge connections that can endure those pressures,
and we continue to test other production
casing sizes to meet customers' needs."
Expandable Casing
More robust deployment systems and
advanced metallurgies have increased

By using expandable solid tubulars rather than cemented liners to isolate zones during
refracturing, Enventure Global Technology says operators can preserve inner diameters,
which increases refrac effectiveness by allowing higher frac pressures. The company
says its latest refrac liners' temperature resistance makes them ideal for high-temperature reservoirs such as the Eagle Ford and Haynesville.

the reliability and versatility of solid expandable tubulars, reports Matt Meiners,
director of technology and product development for Enventure Global Technology. Because expandable tubulars
offer a reliable way to isolate zones and
do so with a minimal effect on inner diameters, he says more operators in problem-prone areas are planning their wells
with expandable casing as part of the
well design.
"In the past, many operators viewed
solid expandable technology as a contingency plan to call on after alternatives
(such as cement squeezes) had failed,"
he says. "But in development fields with
frequent lost circulation zones, it can
make sense to plan in solid expandable
tubulars and have them readily available
so problematic zones can be isolated immediately, and without sacrificing inner
diameter. Having the right expandables
for the well on hand can be more cost-effective than shipping them to the site
after spending several days of rig time
attempting other methods."
Meiners adds that solid expandable
tubulars have numerous offshore and onshore applications, such as stabilizing an
open hole, repairing damaged casing or
improving recovery in sidetrack operations.
He says they also are becoming more
widely used on shore to establish zonal
isolation during refracs, which surged in
popularity during the recent downturn
because they can increase production at
a much lower cost than new wells.
According to Meiners, expandable refrac liners have two advantages over conventional refrac liners. First, because they
can be anchored to the base casing, they
eliminate the need to perform a cementing
job. Second, after expansion, they preserve
most of the well's inner diameter. "When
sealing off old perforations in a 51⁄2-inch
liner, the space inside our expanded 41⁄4inch liner would be double that of a conventional 31⁄2-inch cemented liner," he
calculates. "This allows operators to frac
using higher flow rates, deploy larger
perforating guns, and deliver more fracing
power to the reservoir."
